Miss — Adjusted EPS $2.28 vs ~$2.59 consensus; FY adjusted EPS cut to $9.25–9.70 from $10.30–10.90
Ingredion earnings missed consensus as Argo costs and softer demand hurt margins, forcing a steep cut to full-year adjusted EPS guidance.
Ingredion is trying to shift toward higher-value specialty ingredients, with Texture & Healthful Solutions and the pending Tate & Lyle acquisition as the growth engines, while repairing profitability at its Argo facility in Food & Industrial Ingredients–U.S./Canada. Before this release, management had reaffirmed a 2026 adjusted EPS range of $10.30–$10.90, while Tate & Lyle had already been approved by shareholders and was expected to close in the second half of 2027.
The quarter missed on both earnings and revenue, but the margin miss is the bigger problem. Adjusted diluted EPS was $2.28 versus roughly $2.59 consensus, while revenue was $1.792 billion versus approximately $1.80 billion expected. The sharpest deterioration was operating income: adjusted operating income fell 19% year over year, with U.S./Canada operating income down 36% as Argo manufacturing costs remained elevated and volumes declined.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted diluted EPS (Adjusted EPS reconciliation) | $2.28 (-17%) | $2.75 | ~$2.59 consensus |
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $1,792M (-1%) | $1,816M | ~$1,800M consensus |
| Adjusted operating income (Segment results) | $206M (-19%) | $254M | |
| U.S./Canada operating income (Segment results) | $52M (-36%) | $81M | |
| FY 2026 adjusted EPS guidance (Expected EPS Range) | $9.25–$9.70 | $10.30–$10.90 prior guidance |
The guidance cut confirms this is an execution problem, not just a noisy quarter. Ingredion lowered full-year adjusted EPS guidance by roughly $1.05–$1.20 per share and now expects adjusted operating income to fall mid-teens, versus the prior expectation for a mid-single-digit decline. Management explicitly said Argo’s recovery is taking longer than expected, with higher input costs and softer food and beverage demand adding pressure.
The specialty growth story is still functioning, but it is not offsetting the weakness. Texture & Healthful Solutions delivered volume growth for the tenth consecutive quarter and sales increased 1%, yet operating income fell 10% because higher tapioca and manufacturing costs overwhelmed the volume benefit. LATAM volumes also improved, but currency and the Colombia earthquake reduced profitability. 〔0〕
Cash generation and capital returns remain intact, but they do not change the earnings reset. Nine-month operating cash flow was $389 million versus $539 million a year earlier, while Ingredion continued dividends and remained on track for its $100 million share-repurchase target. The balance sheet is still supporting the business, but the lower cash conversion and higher short-term borrowings leave less room for operational setbacks as Tate & Lyle integration planning proceeds.
Bottom line: This is a clear setback to Ingredion’s near-term recovery story. Specialty volumes are holding up, but Argo’s prolonged cost and demand problems are now large enough to force a material earnings reset.
Tate & Lyle closing, expected in the second half of 2027
