Miss — Revenue $26.0M vs ~$47.6M consensus
BuzzFeed’s Q3 earnings show a 44% revenue collapse and deeper adjusted EBITDA losses as cost cuts fund a risky streaming pivot.
BuzzFeed is in a post-takeover restructuring: Byron Allen’s family office became the controlling investor in May, and the company is trying to turn its brands into a broader free, ad-supported streaming platform. The July plan to cut roughly 35% of the workforce and the streaming ambition were already known, so this quarter tests whether the smaller cost base is stabilizing the underlying business.
The quarter was materially below the market’s revenue bar. Revenue fell to $26.0 million, down 44% year over year, versus a published consensus of roughly $47.6 million. Advertising declined 31%, while commerce and other revenue collapsed 71%; that is not just a cost-reset story, but a sharp deterioration in monetization. The filing gives no company revenue guidance to offset the miss.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $26.0M (-44%) | $46.3M | $47.6M |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $(4.8)M | $0.8M | |
| Cash and restricted cash (Balance Sheet / Cash Flow) | $12.4M | $34.3M |
The restructuring is ahead of the income statement, not yet visible in the business. Management says the July actions reduced its workforce and dedicated contractors by approximately 35% and are expected to produce about $30 million in annualized savings. But adjusted EBITDA swung to a $4.8 million loss from a $0.8 million profit a year earlier, with restructuring costs contributing $7.2 million in the quarter. The savings case therefore remains prospective rather than demonstrated.
Audience resilience is the clearest positive, but it is not translating into revenue yet. BuzzFeed says direct visits and internal web and app referrals rose to 67% of U.S. traffic from 65% in the prior quarter, reducing reliance on outside platforms. That helps the planned streaming strategy, but the simultaneous advertising decline shows the audience position has not yet become a stronger economic engine.
Liquidity remains a meaningful constraint on the pivot. Cash and restricted cash fell to $12.4 million at September 30 from $34.3 million a year earlier, while nine-month operating cash use reached $15.4 million. The company did raise capital during the year and paid down $20 million of term debt, but the filing still shows a business consuming cash while revenue is contracting.
Bottom line: This is a clear earnings miss, not merely a transitional accounting dip. BuzzFeed has a credible cost-cutting and streaming direction, but the quarter shows the legacy business weakening faster than those initiatives are improving it.
