Miss — Net loss/share $(0.10) vs ~$0.10 consensus; NII/share $0.15
Prospect Capital’s earnings show stable recurring NII and improved credit metrics, but large investment losses drove another sharp NAV decline.
Prospect Capital is a large business development company trying to shift its portfolio toward first-lien, senior-secured middle-market loans while exiting lower-yielding real estate and equity-linked assets. That repositioning was already underway before this release; the company’s prior stated strategy emphasized risk reduction, senior lending, low leverage, and declining non-accruals.
Recurring income held up, but the headline earnings result missed. Net investment income was $76.4 million, or $0.15 per common share, essentially flat sequentially but down from $0.17 a year earlier. That recurring income appears better than the roughly $0.10 published EPS expectation, but GAAP net income was a $0.10 per-share loss versus an estimated $0.10 profit, driven by investment losses. The market-relevant takeaway is therefore not a clean earnings beat: the income engine remained intact, while reported shareholder earnings were negative.
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 / Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| NII per common share (Financial Highlights) | $0.15 | $0.15 | $0.17 |
| Net income per common share (Financial Highlights) | $(0.10) | $(0.08) | $0.10 / ~$0.10 |
| Distributions per common share (Financial Highlights) | $0.105 | $0.115 | $0.135 |
| NAV per common share (Financial Highlights) | $5.36 | $5.71 | $6.45 |
| Non-accrual loans, fair value (Portfolio Update) | 0.2% | 0.7% | 0.7% |
| Net cash debt / total assets (Balance Sheet) | 25.0% | 28.6% | 28.2% |
The bigger issue is continued NAV destruction. NAV per common share fell to $5.36 from $5.71 in one quarter and $6.45 a year earlier. The filing attributes the pressure to $98.6 million of net realized and unrealized investment losses, including a $239.6 million unrealized loss in control investments. That overwhelms the quarter’s $76.4 million of NII and means the portfolio is still consuming shareholder value even while generating enough recurring income to support the newly declared $0.035 monthly common distribution.
Credit metrics improved, but the improvement does not erase the valuation damage. Non-accrual loans fell to 0.2% of investments at fair value from 0.7% in the prior two quarters, while net cash debt to total assets declined to 25.0% from 28.6%. The company also reported $1.87 billion of cash and undrawn revolver capacity. Those figures support liquidity and credit resilience, but they coexist with falling fair values, a shrinking portfolio, and net repayments and sales of $166.9 million during the quarter.
The strategic rotation is advancing, but too slowly to change the central story yet. First-lien debt remains the largest cost-based allocation at 71.5%, while equity investments rose to 17.3% from 15.5% sequentially and total originations dropped to $90.5 million from $166.3 million. Prospect also disclosed the pending sale of its RGIS equity stake for approximately $22.0 million. These moves fit the stated plan to recycle capital toward senior loans, but the quarter’s losses show that the legacy portfolio still determines near-term results.
Bottom line: Prospect preserved recurring income and strengthened leverage and non-accrual metrics, but another sharp NAV decline and a GAAP loss make this a mildly negative earnings update. The strategic cleanup is real, yet it has not stopped the erosion in common-shareholder value.
