Chord Energy earnings beat as oil guidance rises again

Beat — adj. diluted EPS $6.08 vs ~$5.89 consensus

Chord Energy earnings beat expectations as production topped guidance, FY26 oil volumes rose again, and free-cash-flow expectations increased by roughly $200 million.

Chord is an oil-heavy Williston Basin producer working to raise output through longer four-mile wells, base-production improvements and tighter marketing economics. Its prior quarter already showed above-plan volumes and a growing four-mile program, while the October 19 CEO transition made execution continuity a near-term question.

The quarter beat the market’s operating and earnings bar. Adjusted diluted EPS was $6.08 versus a published consensus of roughly $5.89, while oil production reached 165.5 MBopd—above the prior guidance range of 161.5–164.5 MBopd. The earnings beat is meaningful, but the production outperformance was partly known before this filing because Chord released preliminary results on October 19. The filing says, “Third quarter volumes were above the top-end of guidance and Chord raised FY26 oil volume guidance for the second time this year.” 〔0〕

The bigger change is the raised operating trajectory, not the reported EPS. FY26 oil-volume guidance moved to 162.0–163.0 MBopd from the prior 160.2–161.8 MBopd range, and management now expects approximately $1.6 billion of 2026 adjusted free cash flow, about $200 million above the August outlook. That reinforces the existing story that production optimization and four-mile execution are adding output without a major capital-spending step-up. The filing also reports 47 four-mile wells turned in line and 70% of lateral footage drilled as four-mile wells as of September 30.

Cash generation and efficiency are carrying the positive read. Adjusted free cash flow reached $431.5 million, nearly double the year-ago figure, despite realized oil prices declining from the second quarter. Chord also says new third-party marketing agreements should generate $35 million–$55 million of annualized savings, while total expected annual run-rate savings have reached $225 million.

The Marcellus sale is helpful but not the core surprise. The company announced a $550 million gross divestiture, including a $55 million deposit already received, with closing expected in the fourth quarter. Because the transaction and timing were disclosed with the results, it adds balance-sheet and portfolio focus but is mostly confirmation rather than a fresh earnings catalyst.

Bottom line: Chord delivered a genuine operating and earnings beat, then raised the production and cash-generation outlook again. The quarter strengthens an already improving execution story, although much of the production upside was previewed before the full release.
