$200M credit facility — $170M term loan + $30M revolver, versus prior $35M revolver
Applied Optoelectronics secured a new $200 million credit facility, materially expanding funding capacity for AI-driven optical manufacturing.
Applied Optoelectronics is scaling optical modules for the fast-growing AI data-center market; its latest annual report identifies internet data centers as its fastest-growing business and ties demand to hyperscalers’ AI infrastructure investment.
The financing capacity expands sharply. The company replaced a $35 million revolving facility with $30 million of revolver capacity plus $170 million of initial term-loan commitments, with another potential $50 million accordion.
| New facility | Prior facility | |
|---|---|---|
| Revolving commitments (Credit Agreement) | $30M | $35M |
| Initial term-loan commitments (Credit Agreement) | $170M | — |
| Potential incremental term loans (Credit Agreement) | $50M | — |
| Maturity (Credit Agreement) | October 30, 2030 | July 31, 2028 |
This is primarily growth funding, not a rescue refinancing. The prior facility still had $35 million of unused revolving commitments when it was terminated, so the important change is the new equipment-financing channel rather than simply preserving liquidity. The term-loan proceeds can fund or refinance eligible equipment, which fits the company’s effort to scale production for AI-related optical demand. 〔0〕
The trade-off is more secured financing and future fixed obligations. The new debt is secured by substantially all of the company’s assets, carries variable rates, and requires quarterly amortization of the initial term loans. 〔1〕 The filing does not say how much of the $170 million has been drawn, so this expands funding optionality more clearly than it proves additional capacity is already operational.
Bottom line: This modestly advances AAOI’s AI-infrastructure expansion story by giving it substantially more equipment-financing capacity, though the benefit is funding access—not yet realized revenue or production growth.
