Miss — Adjusted EPS $0.23 vs ~$0.18 consensus; revenue $219.4M vs ~$239.8M consensus
Matrix Service earnings show a third straight profitable quarter and better margins, but revenue missed consensus and backlog fell 8.5%.
Matrix is in the early stages of an operational turnaround: restructuring has reduced overhead and restored profitability, while management is redirecting growth toward specialty storage, power infrastructure, data centers, LNG/NGL, and mining. The prior quarter had already marked its second consecutive profitable quarter, with management entering fiscal 2027 focused on converting that improved execution into backlog growth.
The turnaround is still producing real operating improvement. Revenue grew modestly year over year, but gross margin expanded to 8.2% from 6.7%, SG&A fell by $3.0 million, and the company delivered its third consecutive profitable quarter. The sharpest evidence is adjusted EBITDA rising to $7.7 million from $2.5 million, supported by better project execution and a leaner cost structure.
| Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Statements) | $219.4M (+3.5%) | $211.9M | ~$239.8M |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $0.23 | $(0.01) | ~$0.18 |
| Gross margin (Financial Highlights) | 8.2% (+1.5 pts) | 6.7% | |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $7.7M (+214%) | $2.5M | |
| Backlog (Backlog table) | $872.6M (-8.5%) | $953.2M at June 30 |
The earnings quality is mixed because the top-line engine is not yet keeping pace. Adjusted EPS exceeded the published consensus, but revenue was about $20 million below expectations, and total book-to-bill was only 0.6x. That means Matrix converted substantially more work into revenue than it replaced during the quarter, leaving backlog down from $953.2 million at fiscal year-end. The shortfall is concentrated in Storage and Terminal Solutions, where book-to-bill was just 0.2x; Utility and Power Infrastructure and Process and Industrial Facilities were healthier at 1.0x and 1.4x, respectively.
The growth mix is improving, but demand is still uneven. Storage revenue rose 12% with margin improving to 9.0%, and Process and Industrial Facilities revenue grew 34% on mining and minerals work. But Utility and Power Infrastructure revenue fell 21% as natural-gas peak-shaving work declined, while Process and Industrial Facilities margin fell to 3.7% because of a subcontractor dispute resolution. The data-center power award and new mining work support the future pipeline, but the quarter does not yet show those opportunities replacing consumed backlog at the company-wide level. 〔0〕
The $25 million buyback is a confidence signal, not a fix for the backlog gap. Matrix remains debt-free with $221.8 million of liquidity, and it repurchased $2.5 million of stock during the quarter. The new authorization gives management another use for excess capital, but it also comes while operating cash flow was negative $37.0 million, so the more important test remains whether profitable execution converts into cash and fresh backlog.
Bottom line: Matrix is executing better and profitability is becoming more durable, but the quarter did not yet validate the expected growth runway. The EPS beat is outweighed by the revenue miss and backlog drawdown, making this a mixed quarter that leans negative versus expectations.
