CrossAmerica Partners LP (CAPL) · Nov 4, 2026 · Earnings
Miss — Adjusted EBITDA $38.7M (-6% YoY); DCF $21.8M (-21% YoY)
CrossAmerica earnings show weaker fuel volumes and quarterly cash flow, partly offset by better merchandise margins and stronger trailing coverage.
CrossAmerica is reshaping a fuel-distribution and convenience-store network through site sales and conversions while trying to preserve fuel-supply relationships and improve the remaining stores’ economics. That strategy was already visible before this filing: portfolio optimization and targeted store upgrades were established priorities, not a new surprise.
The quarter itself was weaker than the standing operating story. Adjusted EBITDA fell 6% and distributable cash flow fell 21% year over year, while current-quarter distribution coverage dropped to 1.09x from 1.39x. The main issue was not fuel margin: it was lost volume, with retail gallons down 9% and wholesale gallons down 8%. 〔0〕
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $38.7M (-6%) | $41.3M |
| Distributable Cash Flow (Financial Highlights) | $21.8M (-21%) | $27.8M |
| Retail fuel gallons (Retail segment results) | 128.6M (-9%) | 141.8M |
| Wholesale fuel gallons (Wholesale segment results) | 162.8M (-8%) | 177.7M |
| Merchandise gross margin (Retail segment results) | 30.3% (+140 bps) | 28.9% |
| Coverage, current quarter (Financial Highlights) | 1.09x (-0.30x) | 1.39x |
| Coverage, trailing 12 months (Financial Highlights) | 1.32x (+0.32x) | 1.00x |
The store strategy is working selectively, but not yet offsetting fuel contraction. Merchandise gross profit rose 2% despite a 7% decline in average company-operated stores, and same-store merchandise sales excluding cigarettes were essentially flat. However, retail fuel gross profit fell 8%, and wholesale gross profit fell 7%; the improvement in per-gallon margins could not compensate for the volume losses. 〔1〕
The balance-sheet and distribution picture is mixed rather than broken. Leverage rose to 3.72x from 3.56x, but the partnership remained within its covenants and reported approximately $237 million of borrowing capacity. More importantly for the distribution story, nine-month distributable cash flow was $76.9 million versus $59.3 million last year and trailing coverage improved to 1.32x from 1.00x. The unchanged $0.5250 quarterly distribution was already announced before the filing, so it adds little new information. 〔2〕
Bottom line: This was a quarterly earnings miss on volumes and cash generation, partially rescued by better merchandise economics and stronger year-to-date coverage. It weakens the near-term operating picture but does not overturn the broader portfolio-optimization story.
