Miss — Core EPS $0.03 vs ~$0.09–$0.13 consensus
Navient’s third-quarter earnings missed expectations: Earnest originations surged, but elevated legacy loan losses overwhelmed core profitability.
Navient is transitioning away from runoff legacy education loans and toward Earnest-led, higher-growth consumer lending; its prior-quarter update emphasized rising originations, cost reductions, and greater focus on in-school and refinance lending.
The growth engine is working, but not yet producing much profit. Earnest originations jumped 77% year over year to $1.4 billion, including 84% growth in in-school loans and 65% growth in refinancing. Average FICO scores remained high at 768–775.
| Metric | 3Q26 | 3Q25 | Consensus |

| GAAP diluted EPS (Financial Results) | $0.16 | $(0.87) | |
| Core diluted EPS (Selected Historical Financial Information) | $0.03 | $(0.84) | ~$0.09–$0.13 |
| Consumer Lending net income (Segment results) | $2M | $(76M) | |
| Private-loan provision (Segment results) | $210M | $155M | |
| Earnest originations (Discussion of Results) | $1.4B (+77%) | $788M | |
| Private-loan charge-off rate (Segment results) | 1.49% | 2.50% |
The earnings miss is operational, not just accounting noise. Core earnings were only $3 million, or $0.03 per share, after excluding derivative and tax volatility; that was far below the published consensus range of roughly $0.09–$0.13 per share. The main drag was a $214 million consumer-lending provision, including $211 million tied to delinquencies and charge-offs expected to remain elevated for longer than previously anticipated.
Portfolio reshaping is advancing, but it also exposes the credit problem. Navient sold about $750 million of legacy private loans for a $162 million gain and classified roughly $2.4 billion of additional loans as held for sale. That supports the shift toward newer, more market-based assets, but the quarter shows the legacy book still requires heavier reserves before it can fully stop weighing on results.
Credit trends are improving in the reported portfolio, but the loss outlook worsened. Private-loan delinquencies above 90 days fell to 2.2% from 2.8% a year earlier, and net charge-offs declined. However, management explicitly extended the expected duration of elevated losses, while refinance-loan provisions remained meaningful. That makes the improvement less clean than the headline delinquency figures suggest.
Bottom line: Navient is successfully growing Earnest and reallocating away from legacy assets, but this quarter says the transition is costing more in credit losses than the new originations are currently earning. The result is a clear earnings miss and a modest setback to the profitability story.
