Miss — Adjusted EPS $0.03 vs ~$0.05 consensus
Orion’s Q3 earnings brought higher 2026 EBITDA guidance and strong free cash flow, but an adjusted EPS miss and weaker volumes exposed ongoing demand pressure.
Orion is a global carbon-black supplier working through a trough-like cycle marked by elevated tire imports, weaker Western tire production and lower 2026 Rubber contract pricing, while using cost cuts and working-capital gains to protect cash flow.
The quarter was a modest earnings miss, not a clean recovery. Adjusted diluted EPS was $0.03 versus a published consensus of roughly $0.05, even as revenue of $472.8 million exceeded the roughly $446–449 million expectation. The sales growth was largely pass-through from higher oil prices rather than stronger demand: volumes fell 5% year over year and pricing declined 2% (Financial Highlights).
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $472.8M (+4.9%) | $450.9M | ~$446–449M |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (Adjusted EPS) | $0.03 | $0.29 | ~$0.05 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Reconciliation of profit) | $66.8M (+15.8%) | $57.7M | |
| Free cash flow (Free cash flow) | $46.0M | $1.9M in Q2 | |
| FY26 Adjusted EBITDA guidance (Outlook) | $190–200M | $170–210M prior | |
| Net leverage ratio (Net leverage ratio) | 4.1x | 3.7x at Dec. 31, 2025 |
Underlying demand remains the problem. Specialty Carbon Black volumes fell 7% in the quarter as customers destocked, while Rubber Carbon Black volumes dropped 4% and pricing fell 4% under annual contracts (Segment results). The company also acknowledged that tire imports have not yet translated into a recovery in North American and European local tire manufacturing.
Cash generation was the strongest part of the release, but it was not all recurring operating improvement. Free cash flow reached $46 million as working-capital initiatives generated $28 million of quarterly cash, helping reduce net debt to $918 million. However, roughly $17 million of Adjusted EBITDA came from the timing of European emissions allowances, so the headline profit improvement overstates the underlying run rate.
Guidance improved, but the quality of the raise is mixed. Orion lifted the midpoint of its 2026 Adjusted EBITDA outlook from $190 million to $195 million and narrowed the range to $190–200 million, reflecting strong year-to-date execution. But management simultaneously flagged above-normal seasonal softness and a heavier fourth-quarter plant-turnaround schedule, while the company’s trailing leverage rose to 4.1x because EBITDA remains below last year’s level.
Bottom line: Orion is generating cash and slightly improving its full-year outlook, but the quarter still showed weak volumes, an adjusted EPS miss and reliance on a timing benefit. The business is stabilizing financially, not yet proving that demand or pricing has turned.
