Miss — Revenue $63.4M vs ~$74.1M consensus
American Bitcoin earnings show 5% Bitcoin-per-share growth without ATM dilution, but revenue missed expectations as seasonal power costs cut mining margins.
American Bitcoin is a majority-owned Hut 8 subsidiary built around two linked businesses: mining Bitcoin below spot cost and accumulating a strategic Bitcoin reserve. Its Q2 filing described reserve expansion and fleet scaling as the core strategy, with roughly 8,000 Bitcoin held at June 30, 2026.
The operating quarter was weaker than expected. Q3 mining revenue fell to $63.4 million from $67.0 million in Q2, below the published consensus of roughly $74.1 million. Bitcoin production also declined to about 891 coins from 932, while gross margin fell to 41% from 49% and mining cost rose to approximately $42,100 per Bitcoin from $36,500.
The headline profit is less clean than it looks. GAAP net income swung to about $126 million from a $57.2 million loss, and Adjusted EBITDA reached roughly $221 million versus a $45.0 million loss. But the income statement shows a $197.3 million gain on digital assets and a $64.3 million loss on derivatives, so the dramatic earnings swing is heavily influenced by Bitcoin-related mark-to-market accounting rather than a comparable improvement in mining output.
The reserve strategy did advance without fresh ATM dilution. Bitcoin holdings increased by roughly 425 coins to 8,427, while Satoshis per share rose about 5% to approximately 11,572. The important part is that the company says this occurred without buying Bitcoin or issuing shares through its ATM program during the quarter. 〔0〕 〔1〕
| Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Statements of Operations) | $63.4M (-5.5%) | $67.0M | $74.1M |
| Bitcoin mined (Mining Platform Performance) | 891 (-4.4%) | 932 | |
| Gross margin (Mining Platform Performance) | 41% (-8 pts) | 49% | |
| Cost to mine (Mining Platform Performance) | $42.1k (+15.3%) | $36.5k | |
| Satoshis per share (Strategic Reserve Growth) | 11,572 (+5.3%) | 10,989 | |
| Bitcoin holdings (Strategic Reserve Growth) | 8,427 (+5.3%) | 8,002 | |
| Net income (Statements of Operations) | $126.0M | $(57.2M) | |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Adjusted EBITDA Reconciliation) | $220.8M | $(45.0M) |
Bottom line: The filing supports the reserve-accumulation story, but the core mining operation moved backward versus both Q2 and expectations as power costs rose. The 5% Bitcoin-per-share gain is meaningful, yet the quarter is a modest operational miss rather than a clean earnings breakthrough.
