Miss — Net assets per share -$0.04 vs ~$0.22 consensus
TriplePoint Venture’s earnings miss exposed weaker income, large realized losses and falling NAV, despite fee relief and post-quarter funding.
TriplePoint Venture is a venture-growth lender trying to rotate its portfolio toward AI and other higher-growth sectors while repairing earnings power and balance-sheet resilience. That backdrop was improving modestly after Q2, when it funded $47.8 million of debt investments and reported a 12.9% portfolio yield, but the company was still managing falling NAV and elevated portfolio risk.
The quarter was a clear earnings miss, not merely a soft comparison. Net assets fell by $0.04 per share versus a published consensus of roughly $0.22, while total investment and other income declined to $20.2 million from $22.7 million. The weaker result reflects both lower yields as rates fell and higher interest expense; it lands materially below the market’s already-lowered expectation.

| Net assets per share (Income Statement) | $(0.04) | $0.38 | ~$0.22 |

| Total investment and other income (Income Statement) | $20.2M | $22.7M | ~$22.2M |

The bigger problem was credit realization, not just lower rates. TPVG recognized $26.4 million of realized investment losses, primarily from selling debt, warrant and equity positions in one portfolio company and writing off a debt investment. Unrealized gains partly offset that damage, but the quarter still ended with a $1.7 million decrease in net assets, and NAV per share fell to $8.32 from $8.73 at year-end.
Portfolio quality also moved in the wrong direction even as management highlights sector rotation. Yellow-rated debt rose to 23.8% of the debt portfolio’s fair value from 13.4% at December 31, 2025, while White-rated exposure fell to 64.7% from 75.1%. Two companies totaling $33.8 million were downgraded from White to Yellow, versus one $28.0 million upgrade. The weighted-average ranking improved slightly from the prior quarter, but the year-to-date credit mix and shrinking portfolio indicate that the risk cleanup is still unfinished.
The filing does contain real support for the next phase, but it does not repair this quarter. The adviser extended its full income incentive fee waiver through fiscal 2027, the sponsor bought 313,865 shares, and TPVG funded $57.4 million of new investments after quarter-end. Those actions help liquidity, alignment and future earning capacity, but they are forward support against a current period marked by lower income, realized losses and weaker NAV. 〔0〕
Bottom line: This was a materially weaker quarter than the market expected, with credit losses and NAV erosion outweighing the fee waiver and post-quarter funding. The AI rotation remains a work in progress rather than evidence that the turnaround is already showing through in results. ibid.
