VIAVI earnings beat as data-center demand lifts margins

Beat — Non-GAAP EPS $0.47 vs ~$0.41 consensus; revenue $469.3M vs ~$455.1M consensus

VIAVI earnings beat both revenue and EPS expectations, with data-center and aerospace demand driving sharp margin expansion and a new $500M buyback.

VIAVI is in the middle of a business mix shift away from weaker wireless spending toward data-center testing, aerospace and defense, helped by the Spirent and Inertial Labs acquisitions. Its fiscal 2026 growth was already being driven by those markets and by the acquired Spirent portfolio.

The quarter beat both the company’s own ceiling and published consensus. Revenue reached $469.3 million versus roughly $455.1 million expected, while non-GAAP EPS was $0.47 versus approximately $0.41 consensus; management said performance came in above the high end of guidance. 〔0〕

Q1 FY2027Q1 FY2026Consensus
Revenue (Financial Highlights)$469.3M (+56.9%)$299.1M~$455.1M
Non-GAAP EPS (Non-GAAP Results)$0.47 (+213.3%)$0.15~$0.41
GAAP operating margin (Financial Highlights)17.4% (+1,490 bps)2.5%
Non-GAAP operating margin (Financial Highlights)29.0% (+1,270 bps)16.3%

The strongest signal is operating leverage, not just acquired revenue. Network and Service Enablement grew 74.1% year over year to $376.1 million, and its operating margin rose to 25.5% from 8.2%; that suggests the data-center and aerospace demand is flowing through to profitability rather than merely adding low-margin sales. OSP was healthier too, but its 12.2% growth was much less dramatic. 〔1〕

The new buyback adds a capital-return signal, but it is authorization—not cash already returned. The board approved up to $500 million in additional repurchases while about $18.4 million remained under the prior plan. The company is not required to use the authorization, and cash declined to $526.7 million from $647.8 million at fiscal year-end while total debt was about $642.5 million, so this is supportive but not the core reason the quarter matters. 〔2〕

The result is preliminary, but the operational signal is clear. VIAVI has not yet filed its Form 10-Q, so the figures can still change. 〔3〕

Bottom line: VIAVI’s existing data-center and aerospace growth story is executing ahead of expectations, with unusually strong margin expansion reinforcing the quality of the growth. The buyback is an added positive, but the earnings beat is what materially advances the business story.
