Mueller Water Products earnings in line as metering exit lifts margins

Metering business exit — ~$40M FY26 metering sales; 100–140 bps annualized margin benefit expected

Mueller Water Products’ earnings were broadly in line, but its metering exit reshapes fiscal 2027 with upfront costs and expected margin gains.

Mueller is a water-infrastructure manufacturer working to shift its portfolio toward core valves, hydrants, repair products and other higher-return water-management businesses while improving margins through operational changes. Its fiscal 2026 third-quarter update had already raised adjusted EBITDA guidance to $367–$372 million, so the year-end result was entering a fairly strong expectation bar.

The quarter itself was broadly in line, not a major earnings surprise. Fourth-quarter adjusted diluted EPS was $0.38 versus a published consensus of roughly $0.38, while revenue of $376.5 million was modestly above the roughly $375.5 million estimate. The more important operating detail was that adjusted EBITDA rose 4.0% despite 1.1% lower sales, as pricing, manufacturing performance and lower corporate spending offset weaker volumes and pressure in Water Management Solutions. The quarter was also enough to finish fiscal 2026 adjusted EBITDA at $372.2 million, fractionally above the company’s prior $367–$372 million range. 〔0〕

The genuinely new information is a deliberate exit from metering, not the earnings print. Mueller will transition its metering software customers to ZENNER, retain existing hardware contracts and warranty obligations, and substantially complete the process in fiscal 2027. The business generated approximately $40 million of fiscal 2026 sales, so this simplifies the portfolio but also removes a visible revenue stream and leaves Mueller responsible for part of the cleanup. 〔1〕

The strategic logic is positive, but the payoff is back-end loaded and execution-dependent. Mueller expects a 100–140 basis-point annualized adjusted EBITDA margin benefit, primarily starting in fiscal 2027’s second quarter, but it also expects approximately $26 million of one-time expenses, mostly in the first quarter. Those costs include warranty liabilities, customer-service and operating expenses, severance, transaction costs and inventory write-offs. The filing also says the company cannot yet provide the required cash-expenditure estimate and will amend the 8-K later, leaving an important piece of the transition economics unresolved.

Fiscal 2027 guidance is credible on profitability but less clean on revenue comparability. The adjusted EBITDA midpoint of $383 million is approximately aligned with the published fiscal 2027 consensus, while the $1.44–$1.47 billion sales range excludes the metering business and therefore cannot be compared directly with older estimates without removing roughly $40 million of metering revenue. The company is effectively asking investors to judge the transition on higher margins and a more focused portfolio rather than headline sales growth.

Bottom line: The earnings were essentially as expected; the material change is Mueller choosing to trade near-term revenue and $26 million of transition costs for a simpler business and potentially better margins. That is modestly constructive for the operating story, but the benefit still depends on customer migration, warranty costs and execution in fiscal 2027.
