Palmer Square Capital BDC Inc. (PSBD) · Nov 4, 2026 · Earnings
Beat — $0.46 per share vs ~$0.38 consensus
Palmer Square BDC’s Q3 earnings beat expectations, but lower investment income and a shrinking portfolio temper the headline result.
PSBD is a diversified, floating-rate credit BDC navigating lower income and portfolio runoff. It primarily invests in broadly syndicated loans and large-cap private credit, with 98% of long-term investments at floating rates, making earnings sensitive to changes in benchmark rates. The quarter’s headline earnings beat the published consensus, but the underlying business was more mixed than the total-return number suggests.
| Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net investment income/share (Financial Highlights) | $0.38 | $0.39 | $0.43 | $0.38 |
| Total investment income (Financial Highlights) | $26.6M (-16.1%) | $27.3M | $31.7M | $26.7M |
| Net increase in assets from operations/share (Operations) | $0.46 | $0.27 | $0.10 | $0.38 |
| NAV/share (Financial Highlights) | $13.34 | $13.21 | $15.39 | |
| Debt-to-equity (Portfolio Highlights) | 1.63x | 1.71x | 1.53x | |
| Non-accrual investments (Portfolio Highlights) | 0.00% | 0.29% | 0.40% |
The earnings beat came from investment marks, not stronger recurring income. Net investment income was $0.38 per share, exactly matching the published consensus, while total investment income of $26.6 million was slightly below the roughly $26.7 million expectation. The $0.46 per-share increase in net assets from operations benefited from $7.0 million of unrealized gains, which more than offset $4.6 million of realized losses. That is a better quarter than Q3 2025, but it does not show a reacceleration in the core income engine.
Credit quality and balance-sheet positioning improved. NAV rose from $13.21 to $13.34 sequentially, leverage fell from 1.71x to 1.63x, and investments on non-accrual declined to effectively zero. The company said, “At the end of the third quarter, there was one portfolio company on non-accrual status.” 〔0〕 This supports the story of a controlled credit book even as earnings pressure persists.
The portfolio is shrinking rather than expanding. PSBD funded $115.0 million of new investments but sold or received repayments on $165.8 million, producing negative net investment activity for the quarter. The company described the period as having “$165.8million aggregate principal amount in sales and repayments.” That may reduce risk and help liquidity, but it also limits asset growth and future interest income unless reinvestment accelerates.
Dividend coverage held, but the cushion is thin. The $0.38 per-share quarterly distribution was covered by $0.38 of net investment income per share, and PSBD declared another $0.36 base dividend for Q4 while expecting a supplemental dividend announcement in December. The company stated, “We expect to announce an additional quarterly supplemental dividend distribution for the fourth quarter of 2026 in December.” 〔1〕 The base payout remains intact, but the flat coverage ratio leaves less room for recurring income to weaken further.
Bottom line: PSBD beat the earnings benchmark because portfolio marks helped offset softer recurring income. The business is better protected on credit and leverage, but the shrinking asset base and lower income mean this is a modest improvement—not a reset of the company’s underlying trajectory.
