Beat — Diluted EPS $0.56 vs ~$0.26 consensus; revenue $1.10B vs ~$758M consensus
Sunrun’s Q3 earnings beat consensus on revenue and EPS, but falling subscriber additions and a cash-generation guide cut muddy the recovery story.
Sunrun is trying to restart growth through a storage-first residential solar model while scaling its direct sales channel and monetizing its installed battery fleet through grid services. Its prior quarter already showed a delayed direct-sales ramp and reduced 2026 cash expectations, with Cash Generation guided to $200M-$375M.
The reported quarter beat the published earnings bar, but the headline overstates the operating recovery. Q3 revenue reached $1.10B and diluted EPS was $0.56, well above the published consensus of roughly $758M and $0.26, respectively. The revenue beat was heavily helped by $546M of energy-systems and product-sales revenue, which Sunrun says reflects its previously established practice of selling certain newly originated systems to a third party rather than a clean acceleration in recurring customer-agreement revenue.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Income Statement) | $1,099.5M (+52%) | $724.6M | ~$757.5M |
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $0.56 | $0.06 | ~$0.26 |
| Subscriber additions (Key Operating Metrics) | 22,957 (-24%) | 30,104 | |
| Net Subscriber Value (Key Operating Metrics) | $9,462 (-28%) | $13,205 | |
| Cash Generation (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $6M | $108M | |
| FY26 Cash Generation guide (Outlook) | ~$200M | $200M-$375M |
The core customer engine remains the weak spot. Subscriber additions fell 24% year over year, while Net Subscriber Value fell 28%; the higher 75% storage attachment rate and 9% year-over-year growth in the installed subscriber base show better product mix and an expanding asset network, but not yet stronger current-period economics. The company’s storage strategy is improving attachment, yet it is doing so alongside lower deployment volume and higher observed capital costs: the discount rate rose to 8.4% from 7.3% a year earlier. 〔0〕
Cash guidance is the clearest deterioration versus the prior story. Sunrun reduced the full-year Cash Generation outlook from a $200M-$375M range to approximately $200M, the bottom of the previous range, even after reporting $56M excluding $50M of safe-harbor equipment investments. That means the quarter’s reported $6M Cash Generation is not a clean demonstration of self-funding growth; it depends materially on excluding equipment investments and on stronger Q4 execution.
The result is a genuine earnings beat but a weaker business-quality read. Operating income turned positive and operating cash flow improved sharply, but operating expenses rose 31%, creation costs in operating expenses doubled, and the company still carries a heavily financing-dependent growth model. The storage network and grid-dispatch activity advance the longer-term platform story, but the quarter does not prove that direct-sales growth and unit economics have fully recovered.
Bottom line: Sunrun beat the narrow earnings consensus, but the more important operating signals were mixed to slightly worse: fewer additions, weaker subscriber economics, and a cash guide cut to its prior low end. This matters because the recovery is still dependent on better execution in Q4 rather than already being established.
