Pacific Biosciences Of California, Inc. (PACB) · Nov 4, 2026 · Earnings
Miss — Revenue $40.6M vs ~$43.82M consensus
PacBio earnings show modest revenue growth, but a consensus miss, lower margins, falling Revio pull-through and a CFO departure complicate the SPRQ-Nx growth story.
PacBio is trying to turn its HiFi long-read sequencing platform into a higher-utilization clinical, population-genomics and AI data business, with SPRQ-Nx intended to lower sequencing costs and expand Revio adoption. That strategy was already established before this report.
The quarter missed the top-line bar. Revenue rose 5.5% year over year to $40.6 million, but came in roughly 7% below the published consensus of $43.82 million. That is a meaningful shortfall for a company whose 2026 plan depends on a second-half acceleration.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $40.6M (+5.5%) | $38.4M | $43.82M |
| Non-GAAP EPS (Reconciliation) | $(0.11) | $(0.12) | $(0.126) |
| Non-GAAP gross margin (Reconciliation) | 36% | 42% | |
| Non-GAAP operating expense (Reconciliation) | $47.0M (-12.8%) | $53.9M | |
| Revio placements (Financial Highlights) | 15 | 13 | |
| Revio pull-through (Financial Highlights) | ~$204K (-13.6%) | ~$236K | |
| Cash and investments (Balance Sheet) | $199.4M | $298.7M |
The core utilization signal is weaker than the placement count suggests. PacBio placed 15 Revio systems versus 13 a year ago, and 35 Vega systems versus 32, but annualized Revio consumables pull-through fell to approximately $204,000 from $236,000. That means the installed base is growing without yet producing the recurring consumables acceleration the SPRQ-Nx strategy needs. The filing says more than half of Revio consumables revenue was tied to SPRQ-Nx and two-thirds of the installed base had opted into the software upgrade, so adoption is real, but the financial conversion remains unproven.
Margin pressure offset the cost-cutting progress. Non-GAAP gross margin fell to 36% from 42%, primarily because of higher memory costs and Vega manufacturing transition costs. Lower personnel expenses reduced non-GAAP operating costs to $47.0 million from $53.9 million, helping non-GAAP EPS beat the loss consensus narrowly, but that improvement came from restructuring rather than stronger operating leverage. 〔0〕 〔1〕
The balance sheet leaves less room for execution error. Cash, cash equivalents and investments fell to $199.4 million from $298.7 million a year earlier, while convertible senior notes remained approximately $643 million. The company is still funding a loss-making transition while its revenue growth remains modest and its recurring usage metric is moving in the wrong direction.
The CFO departure adds execution uncertainty. Jim Gibson stepped down as CFO, with Mark Van Oene taking the interim CFO role and Bill Meyer becoming CAO while PacBio searches for a permanent replacement. 〔2〕
Bottom line: PacBio is making visible progress on placements, SPRQ-Nx adoption and expense control, but the quarter did not yet validate the growth model: revenue missed, margins deteriorated and Revio utilization declined. The CFO transition makes an already demanding execution phase more complicated.
