Personalis earnings beat revenue estimates as losses deepen

Miss — GAAP EPS -$0.32 vs ~-$0.26 consensus

Personalis earnings show a sharp clinical-testing ramp and revenue beat, but deeper losses and no new guidance keep the story mixed.

Personalis is in the middle of scaling its NeXT Personal precision-oncology testing business, with Medicare coverage driving clinical adoption while the pending Tempus merger changes the company’s standalone reporting framework. The Q2 setup already pointed to accelerating clinical volume and Medicare-backed growth, while the merger was announced on July 20, 2026; this quarter adds evidence on the magnitude of that ramp rather than changing the basic story.

Revenue execution was better than the published bar, led by clinical testing. Revenue reached $25.6 million versus a published consensus of about $21.5 million, while clinical revenue rose to $4.4 million from $0.4 million as test volume reached 13,157 from 4,388. The improvement is not only a one-off clinical spike: pharma testing services increased to $17.1 million from $13.1 million and population sequencing rose to $4.1 million from $0.2 million, giving the quarter broader support beyond the new Medicare contribution.

Q3 2026Q3 2025Consensus
Revenue (Financial Results)$25.6M (+76.6%)$14.5M$21.5M
Clinical revenue (Supplemental Revenue Information)$4.4M (+1,039%)$0.4M
Clinical tests (Financial Results)13,157 (+199.8%)4,388
GAAP EPS (Statements of Operations)-$0.32-$0.24-$0.26
Net loss (Statements of Operations)$(33.8)M$(21.7)M
Cash, equivalents and short-term investments (Cash Position)$190.6M

The operating model is still far from profitable. Despite the revenue beat, the net loss widened to $33.8 million from $21.7 million, and GAAP EPS missed the roughly $0.26-per-share loss consensus. Selling, general and administrative expense nearly doubled year over year to $26.0 million, while total costs and expenses rose much faster than revenue. 〔0〕 The result is a stronger top line without proof yet that the clinical ramp is translating into operating leverage.

The cash position remains substantial but is moving in the wrong direction. Personalis ended the quarter with approximately $190.6 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, versus $239.9 million at December 31, 2025. That provides runway, but the balance-sheet decline reinforces that the company is still funding a loss-making expansion rather than harvesting steady profitability.

The merger limits how much standalone guidance investors will get from here. Personalis reaffirmed that it will no longer provide financial guidance or hold a quarterly earnings call because of the pending Tempus transaction. 〔1〕 That makes the reported operating metrics—clinical volume, reimbursement expansion, pharma services and cash burn—more important for tracking execution until the deal closes.

Bottom line: This was a real commercial step forward, with clinical testing and revenue materially ahead of expectations, but the company still missed on per-share losses and remains heavily cash-burning. The quarter strengthens the growth story without yet resolving the profitability problem, while the Tempus merger makes it partly a transition report rather than a clean standalone checkpoint.
