Beat — Non-GAAP EPS $2.09 vs ~$2.00 consensus; revenue $2.37B vs ~$2.35B
Coherent earnings beat consensus as datacenter revenue surged 79% and Q2 guidance moved higher, reinforcing its AI-optics growth story.
Coherent is shifting from a broad photonics supplier toward a high-growth AI-datacenter optics platform, built around transceivers, lasers, InP manufacturing, and newer connectivity products. Its prior outlook already called for a strong Q1, with revenue guided to $2.2B-$2.4B and non-GAAP EPS to $1.85-$2.05.
The quarter cleared both the company’s guide and the market’s bar. Revenue reached $2.37B and non-GAAP EPS $2.09, both above the prior company outlook and roughly ahead of published consensus near $2.35B and $2.00, respectively. That is a real beat, though not a total surprise because expectations had already risen sharply into the print. 〔0〕
| Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $2.37B (+56%) | $1.52B | ~$2.35B |
| Non-GAAP gross margin (Key Metrics) | 40.6% (+184 bps) | 38.8% | — |
| Non-GAAP EPS (Executive Summary) | $2.09 (+80%) | $1.16 | ~$2.00 |
| Q2 FY27 revenue outlook | $2.55B-$2.75B | — | — |
The important part is where the growth is coming from. Datacenter and Communications revenue grew 79% year over year and represented 82% of total revenue, while Scale-across/DCI revenue passed $200M and roughly quadrupled year over year. That confirms the AI-infrastructure demand story is converting into current revenue rather than remaining a future product promise. 〔1〕
The outlook raises the operating bar again. Coherent expects Q2 revenue of $2.55B-$2.75B, implying continued sequential growth after a record quarter, and now expects fiscal 2027 pro forma revenue growth to exceed 60%. It also targets a first quarter above 45% non-GAAP gross margin before the end of calendar 2027, extending the margin-expansion narrative already visible in Q1. 〔2〕 〔3〕
Longer-term visibility improved, but the biggest ramps are still ahead. The new PhotonLink agreement is valued at approximately $20B over five years, with revenue beginning in early calendar 2028, while PhotonLink revenue is expected to exceed $100M in the March 2027 quarter and $250M per quarter before the end of calendar 2027. Those commitments strengthen the multi-year story, but they are not yet current-period revenue and therefore support the narrative more than the present earnings result.
Bottom line: This was more than a routine confirmation: Coherent beat a high bar, showed AI-related demand already flowing through results, and lifted the near-term growth trajectory. The story is clearly stronger, although the largest new platforms remain future contributors rather than today’s main earnings engine.
PhotonLink revenue above $100M in the March 2027 quarter
