Miss — Revenue $86.5M vs ~$95.8M consensus; adjusted EPS -$0.10 vs ~$0.07 loss consensus
Accuray’s earnings show transformation savings and better service margins, but revenue, product orders and backlog weakened sharply as commercial execution remains the key test.
Accuray is entering fiscal 2027 after a transformation program aimed at lowering its cost base, improving service profitability and repairing financial flexibility; management had already warned that it would not provide formal FY2027 revenue or adjusted EBITDA guidance.
The quarter missed the market’s top-line bar. Revenue came in at $86.5 million versus a published consensus of roughly $95.8 million, while adjusted loss per share was $0.10 versus an expected loss of about $0.07. The reported $0.07 GAAP profit is not an operating win: it included a $59.6 million non-cash debt-extinguishment gain that was partly offset by a $35.4 million goodwill impairment charge.
| Q1 FY2027 | Q1 FY2026 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Results) | $86.5M (-8%) | $93.9M | $95.8M |
| Product revenue (Financial Results) | $27.3M (-26%) | $37.2M | |
| Service revenue (Financial Results) | $59.2M (+4%) | $56.8M | |
| Gross margin (Financial Results) | 30.1% (+1.3 pts) | 28.8% | |
| Adjusted operating expenses (Financial Results) | $27.2M (-29%) | $38.3M | |
| Adjusted EPS (Net income reconciliation) | -$0.10 | -$0.18 | -$0.07 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Results) | $2.5M | -$4.1M | |
| Gross product orders (Financial Results) | $19.8M (-50%) | $39.6M | |
| Backlog (Financial Results) | $272.0M (-31%) |
The cost transformation is working, but the commercial engine is not yet. Excluding the impairment, operating expenses fell 29% and adjusted EBITDA turned positive, while service revenue and gross margin improved. Those are real operating gains, not just accounting noise.
The bigger problem is demand for new systems. Product revenue fell 26%, gross product orders were roughly half last year’s level, book-to-bill dropped to 0.7, and backlog was down 31%. That directly challenges the company’s stated FY2027 objective of converting customer engagement and its innovation partnerships into orders and revenue.
The RaySearch and Samsung NeuroLogica work improves the product roadmap, but does not solve the near-term sales gap. The RaySearch agreement advances online adaptive radiation therapy and the Samsung collaboration supports CyberKnife imaging, yet neither produced a disclosed order or revenue contribution in this quarter. 〔0〕
Bottom line: Accuray is becoming leaner and its recurring service business is healthier, but this quarter says the transformation has not yet translated into stronger equipment demand. The commercial miss outweighs the cost improvements, making this a modestly negative earnings update rather than a clean turnaround confirmation.
