Beat — GAAP EPS $0.11 vs ~$0.05 consensus; revenue $83.4M vs ~$78.7M
STAAR Surgical earnings beat Q3 revenue and EPS expectations, with strong underlying growth and cash generation offset by temporary margin pressure.
STAAR is rebuilding growth around EVO ICL adoption, especially in China, while expanding Swiss production, broadening its commercial organization, and developing next-generation presbyopia lenses. That setup was already visible before this release: management had flagged China seasonality, temporary manufacturing-cost pressure, and a transition toward improving profitability.
The quarter beat a relatively low bar. Published estimates centered on roughly $78.7 million of revenue and $0.05 of EPS; STAAR delivered $83.4 million and $0.11, respectively. The headline year-over-year decline is misleading because the prior-year quarter included a one-time $25.9 million deferred China shipment. On the cleaner comparison, revenue grew 21%, while revenue outside China rose 13%.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Comparison | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Income Statement) | $83.4M | $94.7M / $68.8M ex-deferred China | $78.7M |
| GAAP diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $0.11 | $0.18 / $(0.13) ex-deferred China | $0.05 |
| Gross margin (Financial Results) | 70.9% | 75.5% normalized prior year | — |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Reconciliation) | $14.4M | $34.7M / $8.9M normalized | — |
| Free cash flow (FCF Reconciliation) | $26.4M | $1.8M | — |
The underlying demand story is better than the reported China revenue line. China sales were down 30% as reported, but up 31% excluding the prior-year deferred shipment. Distributor unit shipments rose 12.4% through nine months, and management says demand exceeded available supply in the quarter. That means the constraint is increasingly manufacturing capacity and product availability rather than a lack of market demand. 〔0〕
Margins are the main offset to the earnings beat. Gross margin fell to 70.9%, below both the 75.5% normalized prior-year level and Q2's 74.5%. ERP-related production inefficiency, freight, tariffs, and inventory provisions weighed on the quarter. The Swiss manufacturing transition should reduce future China tariff exposure, but the filing says elevated unit costs will continue through year-end, so the margin recovery is still an expectation rather than a delivered result. 〔1〕
Cash generation and the pipeline make the beat more durable, but do not rewrite the story. Nine-month revenue reached a record $270.5 million, free cash flow was $23.4 million, and the company remained debt-free. The start of clinical work on two presbyopia products is a meaningful step beyond the core EVO ICL franchise, although enrollment still depends on remaining regulatory authorizations. The $50 million buyback is supportive capital allocation, but it was authorized in September and is therefore largely confirmation rather than new information. 〔2〕
Bottom line: STAAR beat a modest quarterly expectation because underlying ICL demand, regional growth, and cash generation are holding up. The business is advancing, but the next proof point is whether Swiss manufacturing and capacity improvements can convert that demand into sustainably higher margins.
