HMH earnings miss as equipment orders slip and cash turns negative

Miss — Revenue $171.1M vs ~$214.9M consensus

HMH earnings show resilient service margins but a sharp revenue miss, weaker equipment orders and negative free cash flow as projects slip.

HMH is a newly public drilling-equipment and aftermarket-services company trying to bridge a near-term equipment slowdown with steadier service, spare-parts demand and a broader riser-services platform. Its second-quarter story was already one of weak equipment revenue offset by improving margins, positive cash flow and strong service orders; management had framed the second half of 2026 as a period of improving visibility.

The quarter missed the market’s expected rebound by a wide margin. Revenue was $171.1 million, roughly flat sequentially but about 20% below the published ~$214.9 million consensus, making this a clear earnings miss rather than merely a timing variance. The filing says larger equipment and upgrade opportunities shifted later, while product revenue collapsed 69% year over year.

Services are cushioning the downturn, but not replacing equipment revenue yet. Service revenue rose 9% sequentially and service orders increased 16% year over year, while the higher-margin mix and cost control lifted adjusted EBITDA margin to 22.3% from 18.2% a year ago. That is genuine operational resilience, but it is being overwhelmed by the equipment cycle: product revenue fell to $16.7 million from $54.0 million last year.

The order book gives HMH a path forward, but the timing risk has increased. Orders exceeded revenue at a 1.12x book-to-bill, and total orders grew 12% year over year, led by services. But orders declined 7% sequentially, product orders fell 27%, and management explicitly said equipment activity remained below expectations. The filing therefore supports “delayed opportunities” more than “recovery underway.”

Cash conversion is the clearest new pressure point. Despite positive reported earnings and better EBITDA, operating cash flow was negative $6.2 million and free cash flow was negative $11.6 million, partly because working-capital changes consumed $33.4 million. Cash fell to $90.1 million from $119.7 million at the end of the second quarter, while total liquidity was approximately $165 million. That is not an immediate solvency issue—the company says there is no long-term debt maturity until June 2028—but it reduces flexibility while HMH continues investing in aftermarket capabilities and absorbs the Deepwater Riser Services acquisition. The acquisition itself was announced before this filing, so it is strategic follow-through rather than a fresh surprise.

Bottom line: HMH’s service mix and margins are holding up, but the expected equipment rebound has been pushed out again. The quarter weakens the near-term growth story because the revenue miss and negative cash flow outweigh the encouraging order coverage and operational discipline.ೌ
