MercadoLibre earnings beat revenue but miss EPS as margins compress

Miss — Diluted EPS $8.83 vs ~$9.3 consensus

MercadoLibre’s Q3 earnings beat revenue expectations, but EPS missed as shipping, fulfillment and fintech investments pressured margins.

MercadoLibre is in an intentional reinvestment phase, using free shipping, fulfillment capacity, credit cards and AI to deepen its e-commerce-and-fintech ecosystem across Latin America. Q3 showed that the growth engine is still working, but the near-term earnings trade-off was heavier than the market expected: published estimates pointed to roughly $10.69 billion of revenue and about $9.3 of EPS, against $10.75 billion and $8.83 delivered.

Growth clearly exceeded the profit signal. Revenue rose 45% year over year, while GMV grew 38% and TPV 53%; revenue was modestly above the published consensus, but earnings per share missed because operating profit fell 6% year over year. The core ecosystem is expanding rapidly: active fintech users reached 93 million, unique active buyers reached 94 million, and items sold rose 37% year over year.

The margin pressure was deliberate, but still the quarter’s weak spot. Free shipping, new fulfillment capacity and higher Brazilian affiliate spending reduced operating margin to 6.3%, 40 basis points below Q2. The company says the spending is building purchase frequency and ecosystem engagement, yet the immediate result is that revenue is scaling much faster than operating profit.

The underlying operating metrics make the investment case more credible. Brazil’s cost per shipment fell 5% year over year in local currency, ecosystemic users grew 33%, and the $19–79 shipping range in Brazil became variable-contribution positive in September. Those are meaningful signs that scale and logistics productivity are beginning to offset the cost of the growth push, even though the benefit has not yet reached consolidated margins.

Fintech is scaling faster than it is monetizing. The credit portfolio grew 62% to almost $18 billion, but NIMAL declined one percentage point to 20.1% as credit cards became a larger share of the book. Asset quality remained stable, with 15–90 day NPL at 7.0%, so the issue is currently mix and cohort maturation rather than an obvious credit deterioration.

Bottom line: MercadoLibre is winning users, transactions and share, but Q3 confirms that it is choosing growth investment over near-term margin expansion. That makes the quarter operationally healthy but an earnings miss, with the next test being whether logistics efficiency and maturing fintech cohorts eventually convert this growth into higher profit.
