Beat — Diluted EPS $0.09 vs ~$0.04 consensus
UWM’s Q3 earnings beat published EPS and revenue estimates, but originations, gain margins and adjusted EBITDA all declined.
UWM is the largest wholesale mortgage lender, using its broker network, servicing portfolio and technology investments—including AI—to defend share in a weak mortgage market. The company also entered the quarter with a much stronger capital base after a previously announced $2.05 billion equity investment.
The reported quarter beat the published earnings bar, but the operational trend was softer. Diluted EPS was $0.09 versus a published consensus of roughly $0.04, while revenue was $811.1 million versus roughly $690.3 million. The actual results were also consistent with the preliminary ranges UWM had already disclosed, so the earnings beat is real but not a fresh surprise.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $0.09 | $(0.24) | ~$0.04 consensus |
| Total revenue (Financial Highlights) | $811.1M | $888.0M | ~$690.3M consensus |
| Loan origination volume (Financial Highlights) | $33.4B (-15.9%) | $39.7B | $41.7B |
| Total gain margin (Financial Highlights) | 1.24% | 1.33% | 1.30% |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $178.3M (-4.1%) | $185.9M | $211.1M |
| MSR unpaid principal balance (Mortgage Servicing Rights) | $269.8B (+8.9%) | $247.6B | $216.0B |
The core origination franchise contracted again. Loan production fell to $33.4 billion, down from $39.7 billion in Q2 and $41.7 billion a year earlier, with refinance volume particularly weak. The gain margin also slipped to 124 basis points from 133 basis points in Q2, meaning UWM produced fewer loans and earned slightly less production revenue per dollar originated.
Profitability was rescued by servicing-related valuation gains rather than stronger production. Mortgage servicing income rose to $246.6 million from $220.5 million a year earlier, and the MSR portfolio expanded to $269.8 billion of unpaid principal balance. But the quarter also included a $470.3 million MSR fair-value gain that was largely offset by a $481.5 million loss on interest-rate derivatives. That mix explains why GAAP net income recovered sharply while adjusted EBITDA remained below both comparison periods.
The balance sheet is materially less stretched than it was after Q2. Net non-funding debt-to-equity fell to 1.77x from 5.65x, helped by the new preferred-capital structure and higher total preferred and common equity. That gives UWM more room to carry its servicing assets and continue investing in broker technology, although cash declined to $420.4 million from $498.4 million in Q2. 〔0〕
Bottom line: UWM beat the published Q3 earnings benchmark and repaired its balance-sheet leverage, but the underlying mortgage-production engine weakened again. The filing modestly improves the story because of the earnings beat and larger servicing platform, not because operating momentum has clearly turned.
