Rand Capital earnings show portfolio growth, but non-accruals cut income

Miss — NII $0.23/share vs $0.33 prior year; no reliable published consensus identified

Rand Capital’s third-quarter earnings show a larger portfolio and modest NAV gains, but non-accrual investments continue weighing on income and yields.

Rand is a small externally managed business development company rebuilding around higher-yielding debt investments after a sharp rise in non-accruals weakened its income base. Its 2025 strategy called for portfolio expansion and income growth, but three debt investments were already on non-accrual at year-end 2025, and the second quarter showed the same pressure continuing.

The portfolio is growing, but the income engine is not yet repaired. Fair value reached $56.7 million, up 17.0% from year-end 2025, and portfolio-company interest income rose 4% sequentially to $1.2 million. But total investment income fell 17% year over year to $1.3 million, while net investment income declined to $0.23 per share from $0.33. The filing attributes the shortfall primarily to investments placed on non-accrual status.

The quarter’s accounting gains were real, but they do not erase the credit problem. Rand recorded $275,000 of net realized and unrealized investment gains, allowing NAV per share to edge up from $17.33 in June to $17.36. However, the quarter included a $2.0 million realized loss on BMP Swanson that merely reversed an earlier unrealized write-down, so it did not create new NAV damage rather than representing a fresh recovery. 〔0〕

Liquidity is workable, but the balance sheet is more leveraged and less flexible than at year-end. Cash fell to $223,000 from $4.2 million, while $5.0 million was drawn on the line of credit; remaining availability was approximately $12.4 million. That provides funding capacity, but it also means the company is relying more on borrowings while its debt portfolio yield has fallen to 8.97% from 11.3%, largely because of non-accruals.

The sequential improvement is too small to change the larger story. Interest income improved and portfolio value expanded after $12.0 million of first-half deployment, but there were no new or follow-on cash investments in the third quarter, and the yield and income trends remain below the prior-year level. With no reliable published consensus identified, the cleanest benchmark is Rand’s own prior-year performance: this was a miss on income, even though NAV held up and the portfolio continued to grow.

Bottom line: Rand is adding assets, but the new capital has not yet offset lost income from non-accrual investments. The quarter modestly weakens the recovery story rather than overturning it.
