Beat — Diluted EPS $0.24 vs ~$0.01 consensus; revenue $88.7M vs ~$89.6M
Twin Disc earnings show a sharp EPS rebound, rising backlog and defense momentum, though revenue slightly missed consensus and margins held flat.
Twin Disc is a marine and heavy-duty power-transmission manufacturer coming off a strong fiscal 2026, with growth concentrated in Veth, Katsa, defense, and marine markets. Its six-month backlog ended fiscal 2026 at $178.3 million, supported by stronger order rates and the Veth product line.
The quarter materially beat the earnings bar. Diluted EPS reached $0.24 versus a published consensus of roughly $0.01, while revenue was $88.7 million versus approximately $89.6 million expected. That makes this an earnings beat driven by profitability and operating leverage, not a clean top-line beat.
| Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Income Statement) | $88.7M (+10.9%) | $80.0M | ~$89.6M |
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $0.24 | $(0.04) | ~$0.01 |
| Gross margin (Financial Highlights) | 28.7% | 28.7% | |
| EBITDA (EBITDA reconciliation) | $7.7M (+62.6%) | $4.7M | |
| Six-month backlog (Backlog discussion) | $190.6M (+6.9% vs. Q4) | $178.3M prior quarter |
Growth is becoming more defense-led, but the segment mix needs watching. Sales rose 10.9% organically by 11.8%, with Marine and Propulsion Systems up 14.4% and Industrial up 35.3%. Management also cited accelerating U.S. and European defense orders, including initial U.S. Navy unmanned-vessel program orders. However, Land-Based Transmissions fell 14.7% under the reported classification, and $4.7 million of Katsa revenue was moved into Industrial, making the segment comparison less clean. 〔0〕
Cash generation and leverage improved alongside the earnings rebound. Operating cash flow was $11.5 million versus a $7.5 million outflow last year, free cash flow was $5.6 million, and net debt fell to $13.1 million from $29.5 million a year earlier. That strengthens the company’s ability to fund its European and Racine capacity investments while retaining flexibility for potential M&A.
The main limitation is that margin expansion has not arrived yet. Gross margin stayed at 28.7% despite stronger sales, partly because Katsa and Veth carry below-company-average margins. The result therefore validates demand and cost control more than it proves a higher-margin business mix. 〔1〕
Bottom line: This is a modestly better-than-expected quarter that strengthens Twin Disc’s recovery story through earnings, backlog, defense demand, and cash flow. The revenue miss and unchanged gross margin keep it from being a full-scale upgrade to the business outlook, but the operating trajectory is clearly healthier than a year ago.
