Wayfair earnings beat as U.S. growth hits double digits

Beat — Adjusted diluted EPS $0.93 vs ~$0.81 consensus; revenue $3.42B vs ~$3.36B

Wayfair’s Q3 earnings beat consensus on revenue and adjusted EPS, with U.S. share gains and stronger cash generation offset by international losses.

Wayfair is in a U.S.-focused growth and profitability push, trying to take share in home furnishings while its international business remains challenged. Its prior quarter showed 7.5% revenue growth and 8.7% U.S. growth, so the direction was already improving; Q3 tests whether that momentum is broadening.

The core U.S. growth story strengthened meaningfully. Revenue rose 9.7% year over year to $3.42 billion, above the published consensus of roughly $3.36 billion, while U.S. revenue grew about 11.4% to $3.04 billion. Orders increased 12% and active customers rose about 4.7%, which is better evidence of demand expansion than revenue alone. The company says, “That growth was driven by orders, which were up 12% year-over-year, and active customers up more than 4%.” 〔0〕

Growth is converting into better operating leverage. Adjusted EBITDA rose 13.5% and margin expanded to 6.9%, while contribution margin improved to 16.1% from 15.8%. GAAP operating income reached $106 million versus $38 million a year earlier, and net income swung to $62 million from a $99 million loss. The company described this as its strongest post-pandemic growth quarter, and the numbers support that framing. 〔1〕

The improvement is still heavily U.S.-dependent. U.S. adjusted EBITDA increased to $261 million from $209 million, but international adjusted EBITDA deteriorated to a $25 million loss from a $1 million loss, while international revenue declined to $380 million from $389 million. That means the earnings beat is not a broad-based global recovery; it is primarily a stronger U.S. execution story. 〔2〕

Cash generation improved, but the balance sheet remains a constraint. Nine-month operating cash flow increased to $506 million from $332 million and free cash flow reached $331 million from $184 million. However, cash and cash equivalents fell to $1.04 billion from $1.48 billion at year-end after debt repayment, share repurchases and other financing outflows, while the company still carried $2.57 billion of long-term debt. The business is funding itself better, but the capital structure is not yet clean enough to make the turnaround risk-free.

Bottom line: This was a real execution beat that strengthens Wayfair’s U.S. share-gain and profitability story. It matters because demand growth and margins both exceeded expectations, though the improvement remains concentrated in the U.S. and international losses continue to weigh on the broader turnaround.
