Beat — Adj. EPS $3.09 vs ~$2.97 consensus; revenue $982.7M vs ~$960.4M
Charles River earnings beat revenue and adjusted EPS expectations, with DSA strength lifting organic growth and 2026 guidance.
Charles River is in an early recovery phase for outsourced biopharma research, reshaping its portfolio around higher-value discovery, safety assessment, and manufacturing services after divesting CDMO and Cell Solutions assets. The setup was already improving: second-quarter organic growth had turned slightly positive, and September’s Investor Day pointed to better demand and long-term margin expansion.
This was a genuine quarterly beat, not just a tax-driven headline. Revenue reached $982.7 million versus a published consensus of roughly $960 million, while adjusted diluted EPS was $3.09 versus roughly $2.97. The bigger signal is organic revenue growth of 4.7%, well above the prior full-year target range of 0.0% to 1.0%. Revenue was still down 2.2% reported because the May divestitures removed businesses, but the continuing operations were growing faster than expected.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / Prior guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $982.7M (+4.7% organic) | $1,004.9M | ~$960.4M consensus |
| Diluted EPS, non-GAAP (Earnings reconciliation) | $3.09 (+27.2%) | $2.43 | ~$2.97 consensus |
| Non-GAAP operating margin (Segment results) | 23.0% | 19.7% | — |
| 2026 organic revenue growth (Guidance) | At least +1.5% | — | 0.0%–1.0% prior |
| 2026 non-GAAP EPS (Guidance) | $11.35–$11.55 | — | $11.15–$11.45 prior |
DSA is now the main engine of the recovery. Discovery and Safety Assessment delivered 5.9% organic growth and lifted its non-GAAP operating margin to 26.8% from 25.4%. Management also pointed to stronger bookings and proposals, which matters more than the reported revenue decline because it supports future workload conversion.
The earnings quality is better than GAAP EPS suggests, but not clean. GAAP EPS benefited from a $245.6 million, or $5.06 per-share, reversal of acquired tax reserves; that is not operating momentum. The adjusted result still improved 27.2% year over year, helped by margin expansion, DSA volume, and a lower tax rate. Manufacturing’s organic growth was strong at 7.4%, while RMS remained the weak spot with organic revenue down 0.6% and adjusted margin falling to 24.4% from 25.0%.
Guidance moved clearly above the prior operating baseline, though part of the upgrade was already foreshadowed. The company raised its organic revenue floor to at least 1.5% and its adjusted EPS range to $11.35–$11.55, after saying at Investor Day that results were tracking toward the upper end of the earlier range. That makes the direction partly known, but the quarter’s magnitude and the new organic-growth floor are fresh evidence that demand is improving faster than the August outlook assumed. 〔0〕
Bottom line: Charles River is showing the operating recovery investors were waiting for, led by DSA and supported by manufacturing strength. The tax benefit flatters GAAP results and RMS is still soft, but the core quarter beat expectations and pushed the business story meaningfully forward.
