Beat — Adj. EPS $1.93 vs ~$1.91 consensus
Materion’s Q3 earnings narrowly beat EPS expectations, while semiconductor demand, backlog and a higher 2026 guidance range strengthen the outlook.
Materion is in the middle of a semiconductor- and aerospace-led growth cycle, with record backlog and rising order rates supporting its advanced-materials portfolio. That setup was already visible after its August 5, 2026 report, when it raised 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $6.80–$7.20 and cited backlog growth of roughly 30% year over year.
The quarter was a narrow earnings beat, not a clean top-line beat. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.93 versus published consensus of roughly $1.91, but reported sales of $567.3 million trailed the roughly $611 million consensus estimate. The revenue shortfall is less damaging than it looks because a large portion of Materion’s sales is pass-through metal cost; value-added sales, the better measure of underlying activity, rose 19% to $313.7 million.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / Prior guide | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Statements) | $567.3M | $444.8M | ~$611M |
| Value-added sales (Financial Highlights) | $313.7M (+18.9%) | $263.9M | |
| Adjusted EPS (Adjusted EPS reconciliation) | $1.93 | $1.41 | ~$1.91 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $70.7M (+27.4%) | $55.5M | |
| FY2026 adjusted EPS guidance (Outlook) | $7.10–$7.40 | $6.80–$7.20 prior |
The underlying engine remains Electronic Materials. Its quarterly value-added sales increased to $103.4 million from $79.7 million, while adjusted EBITDA climbed to $33.2 million from $21.6 million; the segment’s adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 32.1% from 27.1%. That points to genuine operating leverage in the semiconductor-related business rather than growth coming only from higher metal prices.
Management raised the bar again, which is the most important change in the filing. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance moved from $6.80–$7.20 to $7.10–$7.40, a roughly 4% increase at the midpoint. The company also expects a meaningful fourth-quarter sales step-up, supported by record backlog and continued order momentum.
The result is not flawless. Performance Materials’ nine-month adjusted EBITDA remains below last year’s level, and the quarter’s reported revenue missed consensus even as value-added sales and profitability improved. Still, those negatives are outweighed by the stronger semiconductor contribution, improved cash generation and another upward revision to the earnings outlook. Net cash from operations reached $142.7 million for the first nine months versus $83.7 million a year earlier, while free cash flow rose to $84.8 million from $25.0 million (Cash Flow statement).
Bottom line: This reinforces Materion’s existing growth story rather than rewriting it: the semiconductor and backlog-driven recovery is translating into higher earnings, and management is raising expectations again. The revenue miss keeps it from being a standout beat, but the business signal is clearly better than the market’s prior baseline.
