Beat — Non-GAAP EPS $2.62 vs ~$2.50 consensus
ArcBest earnings beat on a sharp Asset-Light recovery and better operating leverage, but Q4 ABF margins are expected to worsen seasonally.
ArcBest is in the middle of a restructuring and simplification effort: it is consolidating brands, exiting the Vaux Freight Movement System, reducing costs, and trying to rebuild Asset-Light profitability. The July plan targeted roughly $40 million in annualized cash savings, but those savings support existing 2028 targets rather than raising them.
The quarter beat on adjusted earnings, not revenue. Non-GAAP diluted EPS came in at $2.62 versus a published consensus around $2.50-$2.54, while revenue of $1.21 billion was broadly in line with expectations near $1.20-$1.23 billion. On a GAAP basis, earnings also improved to $2.30 from $1.72 a year earlier.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Data) | $1,210.5M (+15.5%) | $1,048.1M | ~$1,200M |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $2.62 (+79.5%) | $1.46 | ~$2.50 |
| Asset-Based non-GAAP operating ratio (Segment reconciliation) | 90.4% (-210 bps) | 92.5% | |
| Asset-Light non-GAAP operating income (Segment reconciliation) | $14.4M | $1.6M |
Asset-Light is the clearest improvement in the story. Revenue rose 25.4% year over year, and the segment moved from a $1.6 million prior-year operating loss to $14.4 million of non-GAAP operating income. That is meaningful progress toward ArcBest’s longer-term plan for Asset-Light, although the business remains far below the company’s 2028 target range of $40 million to $70 million in annual non-GAAP operating income.
ABF’s improvement is real, but the quality is mixed. The non-GAAP operating ratio improved to 90.4% from 92.5%, helped by a heavier freight mix and higher revenue per shipment. But shipments per day fell 3.0%, revenue per hundredweight rose only 1.1%, and revenue per hundredweight excluding fuel surcharge declined in the low single digits. The company is earning more per shipment, but not yet showing broad-based volume strength. 〔0〕
The near-term outlook takes some of the shine off the beat. ArcBest expects ABF’s fourth-quarter non-GAAP operating ratio to worsen by 50 to 150 basis points sequentially, consistent with seasonal pressure. Asset-Light’s expected $7 million to $10 million of fourth-quarter non-GAAP operating income excluding purchase-accounting amortization is also partly supported by an estimated $12 million lease-modification gain in GAAP results. 〔1〕
Bottom line: This was a genuine earnings beat and a meaningful operational step forward, especially in Asset-Light. But the core LTL recovery still depends heavily on freight mix and pricing, while the next quarter carries an explicitly weaker seasonal margin outlook.
