Miss — diluted EPS $0.13 vs ~$0.23–$0.26 consensus
Intrepid Potash earnings missed EPS expectations, but stronger Trio margins, higher production guidance and a bigger growth plan improve the operating story.
Intrepid is in an operating-recovery phase: it is trying to restore potash output while making Trio® the stronger growth and margin engine, helped by a new continuous miner at the East Mine. Earlier 2026 guidance had already pointed to higher production from both businesses, so the broad improvement story was not a surprise.

The quarter missed the clean earnings benchmark. Diluted EPS of $0.13 was well below published expectations around $0.23–$0.26, while revenue was broadly in line with the roughly $50.4–$51.2 million range available before the release. The earnings miss reflects how little operating profit remains after costs: consolidated gross margin was essentially flat year over year at $10.0 million, even as net income and adjusted EBITDA improved. “Net income from continuing operations increased to $1.7 million, or $0.13 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2026, compared with $0.7 million, or $0.05 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2025.”
Trio® is the part of the business moving decisively forward. Production rose 19%, realized pricing increased to $408 per ton, and gross margin climbed about 33% as East Mine operating performance improved. “The Trio® segment’s gross margin increased by approximately 33% compared to the prior-year quarter driven by stronger pricing along with improvement in Trio® segment COGS per ton, which declined to $224 per ton from $257 per ton in the third quarter of last year.”
The guidance increase supports the operational thesis, but it is not a clean win. Trio® production guidance moved up to 305,000–315,000 tons from 295,000–305,000, confirming that the new miner and mill improvements are producing tangible gains. “Intrepid is increasing our full-year 2026 Trio® production guidance to a range of 305 thousand to 315 thousand tons.” 〔0〕 At the same time, capital spending rose to approximately $45 million from $40 million, and potash margins deteriorated as higher-cost production and delayed Moab harvesting weighed on the segment.
The balance sheet gives Intrepid room to fund the next leg of growth. The company ended the quarter with substantial cash, no borrowings and nearly all of its revolving facility available. It also disclosed a potential $139 million USDA matching award for a proposed 220,000-ton sulfate-of-potash facility, but that project remains subject to a final investment decision and is not yet an operating asset. “As of September 30, 2026, the Company had no borrowings and $0.5 million in outstanding letters of credit under its revolving credit facility, leaving $149.5 million available under its $150 million facility, which matures in March 2031.”
Bottom line: This is a mixed quarter: the headline earnings result missed expectations, but the more important operating trend—Trio® production, costs and future capacity—is improving. The filing strengthens the recovery story without yet overcoming the weak potash margin profile or the immediate EPS shortfall.
