Beat — Adjusted EPS $0.51 vs ~$0.45 consensus
Oportun’s Q3 earnings beat expectations, with stronger originations, lower funding costs and credit losses driving a sizable 2026 guidance raise.
Oportun entered this report rebuilding profitable growth in consumer lending: originations had begun recovering, while management was emphasizing lower-risk secured loans, returning members, tighter underwriting and cheaper funding. Its Q2 report had already shown a return to originations growth, improving delinquency and lower full-year credit-loss expectations.
The quarter clearly beat the operating bar. Adjusted EPS of $0.51 exceeded the published consensus of roughly $0.45, while revenue of $246.3 million topped the roughly $237.9 million expectation. Revenue also returned to year-over-year growth, originations rose 12%, and Adjusted EBITDA reached $56.5 million versus $41.2 million a year earlier.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $246.3M (+3.2%) | $238.7M | ~$237.9M consensus |
| Adjusted EPS (Adjusted EPS) | $0.51 (+30.8%) | $0.39 | ~$0.45 consensus |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Reconciliation) | $56.5M (+37.1%) | $41.2M | $43–48M prior guide |
| Originations (Operating Metrics) | $571.8M (+11.7%) | $511.8M | Mid-single-digit FY growth expected |
| Annualized net charge-offs (Operating Metrics) | 10.6% | 11.8% | 11.0% ±15 bps prior guide |
The quality of growth improved, not just the volume. The company grew originations through returning unsecured members and secured personal loans, which together increased 25%, while the annualized net charge-off rate fell to 10.6% from 11.8%. Lower funding costs also mattered: cost of debt declined to 6.1% from 8.1%, lifting risk-adjusted net interest margin to 19.0% from 16.4%. 〔0〕
The full-year raise is the most important change to the story. Revenue guidance moved to $955–$960 million from $935–$955 million, Adjusted EBITDA to $183–$188 million from $160–$175 million, and Adjusted EPS to $1.60–$1.70 from $1.50–$1.65. The expected full-year charge-off rate also improved to 11.6% ±10 basis points from 11.7% ±30 basis points. That is a meaningful upgrade to both growth and profitability, rather than merely a quarterly upside surprise. 〔1〕
The new “Oportun Forward” strategy adds direction but not yet proof. Management says it will simplify the core business, improve offers for qualified applicants, make returning-member experiences easier and streamline operations. The executive additions, including the new CFO and product and sales leaders, were already announced before this report, so the strategy is partly known; the genuinely new evidence is that execution is beginning to show up in originations, margins and earnings.
Bottom line: This report materially strengthens Oportun’s rebuilding story: growth has returned while credit performance and funding economics improved. The higher full-year outlook makes this more than a routine earnings beat, though the new strategy still needs sustained execution to become durable growth.
