Beat — After-tax adjusted operating EPS $2.20 vs ~$2.17 consensus
Unum Group’s Q3 earnings narrowly beat consensus, but higher disability claims and weaker international results pressured core operating profitability.
Unum is in the middle of shrinking its legacy long-term-care exposure while trying to grow its core workplace-benefits franchise; the Fortitude Re transaction was already announced and was expected to close in the second half of 2026.
The quarter technically beat, but only narrowly. After-tax adjusted operating EPS was $2.20 versus published consensus of roughly $2.17-$2.18, making this a Beat rather than a meaningful upside surprise. The underlying operating picture was less clean: segment adjusted operating revenue rose 4.6%, but consolidated segment adjusted operating income was $303.6 million versus $(73.5) million a year earlier, with the comparison heavily distorted by last year’s reserve actions.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| After-tax adjusted operating EPS (Reconciliation) | $2.20 | $2.81 | ~$2.17 |
| Premium income (Financial Highlights) | $2,800.7M (+4.2%) | $2,688.0M | |
| Segment adjusted operating revenue (Financial Highlights) | $3,400.5M (+4.6%) | $3,250.4M | |
| Core operating segments income (ROE table) | $386.5M (-25.4%) | $518.0M | |
| Unum US segment operating income (Financial Results — Unum US) | $315.3M (-35.2%) | $486.8M |
The main business engine weakened. Unum US, the largest operating segment, grew premium income 5.2% but saw adjusted operating income fall 35.2%. Its benefit ratio jumped to 62.0% from 51.1%, and the company says the quarter included reserve-assumption updates and refinements. That means the headline revenue growth is not translating cleanly into earnings:
The portfolio was mixed rather than broadly healthy. Colonial Life improved materially, with segment adjusted operating income up 35.0% to $169.4 million, but Unum International nearly stalled at $0.2 million versus $44.2 million, while core operating-segment return on equity fell to 21.3% from 28.6%. The better result in the Closed Block was real—its loss narrowed to $135.6 million from $682.3 million—but that legacy business is being run off and is excluded from the company’s core adjusted operating-income measure.
GAAP earnings were hit by the already-announced Fortitude Re transaction. Unum recorded an $833.5 million net investment loss tied to the new long-term-care reinsurance agreement, driving a $419.7 million quarterly net loss despite positive adjusted operating earnings. This is largely transaction accounting rather than a fresh deterioration in recurring premiums, but it makes reported earnings and book value substantially noisier while the deal closes. The company’s adjusted stockholders’ equity fell to $11.5 billion from $12.5 billion at year-end, and leverage rose to 25.0% from 23.6% (Capital Metrics; Leverage Ratio).
Bottom line: Unum cleared a modest earnings bar, but the more important operating signal is weaker core profitability—especially in Unum US—partly offset by improving Colonial Life and continued cleanup of long-term care. This is a narrow beat, not a clean acceleration of the business story.
