Miss — Diluted EPS -$5.15 vs ~$1.26 consensus
LendingTree earnings beat revenue expectations and lifted adjusted EBITDA growth, but a $98.8M goodwill impairment produced a major GAAP loss.
LendingTree is rebuilding a diversified financial-products marketplace around Insurance growth, home-equity demand, AI-assisted shopping, and tighter capital discipline. The prior setup already expected strong Insurance performance and a pressured Consumer business, while Q3 guidance called for $325–$335 million of revenue and $34–$36 million of adjusted EBITDA.

The operating quarter was better than the headline loss suggests. Revenue of $343.6 million beat the published consensus near $329.7 million and exceeded the prior Q3 guidance range; adjusted EBITDA of $39.6 million also cleared the $35 million midpoint. Insurance remained the engine, with revenue up 15% year over year, while Home grew 9%; the weaker spot was Consumer, where segment profit fell 16% despite 2% revenue growth. The filing says this was LendingTree’s tenth straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth. 〔0〕
GAAP earnings were a clear miss because of a large impairment charge. LendingTree recorded a $98.8 million goodwill impairment, turning what the market expected to be roughly $1.26 of positive EPS into a $5.15 diluted loss. That charge is non-cash and does not erase the quarter’s operating progress, but it still materially worsens reported earnings and signals that some previously acquired asset value no longer supports management’s carrying assumptions.
The outlook improved on adjusted profitability, not on revenue growth. Management now points to 17% revenue growth and 14% adjusted EBITDA growth at the midpoint of its updated 2026 forecast. That keeps revenue growth broadly aligned with the prior full-year framework while raising the EBITDA growth ambition from the earlier 12% midpoint, suggesting better operating leverage than the Q2 outlook implied. 〔1〕
Capital allocation became more shareholder-oriented, but the core business still has uneven momentum. The company repaid $60 million of long-term debt during the quarter and plans to resume share repurchases in Q4, its first buyback since the first quarter of 2022. That is a meaningful balance-sheet and capital-allocation change, but Consumer weakness and the decline in variable marketing margin to 28% from 30% a year ago show that growth is still being purchased at some efficiency cost.
Bottom line: The underlying marketplace executed ahead of expectations, especially in Insurance and adjusted EBITDA, but the goodwill impairment created a genuine GAAP earnings miss. This advances the operating story modestly while complicating the financial picture, so the event is mixed rather than cleanly positive.
