Jackson Financial earnings beat as annuity sales hit records

Beat — Adjusted operating EPS $7.55 vs ~$7.24 consensus

Jackson Financial’s Q3 earnings modestly beat expectations, while record retail annuity and RILA sales strengthen its growth story.

Jackson is building a retirement-income franchise around annuities, with RILAs and spread products driving growth while PPM and the TPG partnership broaden its asset-sourcing capabilities. Its strategy already emphasized scaling RILA distribution, diversifying earnings and generating capital, so this quarter is an execution update rather than a wholesale change in direction.

Underlying earnings cleared the market’s bar, but only modestly. Adjusted operating earnings were $517 million, or $7.55 per diluted share, versus a published consensus of roughly $7.24, a narrow beat. The cleaner figure excluding notable items and taxes was $7.67 per share, up from $5.98 a year earlier. The result is better than expected, but not large enough to rewrite the earnings trajectory; analysts were already expecting another year-over-year increase after Jackson’s $7.30 adjusted EPS in the second quarter.

The more important business signal is mix and demand, not the GAAP profit surge. Retail annuity sales reached a record $6.5 billion, with RILAs providing the main acceleration; retail-annuity pretax adjusted operating earnings rose to $638 million from $494 million. That supports Jackson’s intended shift toward newer, capital-efficient products and indicates its distribution engine is still gaining traction. The offset is that institutional sales and earnings declined, so growth remains concentrated in retail rather than broad-based across every segment.

Capital generation remains supportive despite continued shareholder returns. Jackson produced $281 million of free capital at the operating company and $275 million of holding-company free cash flow while distributing $325 million from the operating company and returning $291 million to common shareholders. JNL’s estimated RBC ratio was still 524%, although it fell from the prior quarter as required capital increased with new business. This is consistent with the company’s stated 2026 ambition of at least $1.2 billion of free capital generation and $900 million to $1.1 billion of capital returns, though the quarter itself does not raise those targets.

The headline net-income jump is less durable than the operating result. GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders rose to $847 million from $65 million, but the quarter included a $337 million gain from business reinsured to third parties and large market-driven hedging and market-risk-benefit effects. Jackson itself says these reinsured-business results can vary significantly and have little impact on statutory capital or free cash flow, so the adjusted operating result and sales trends are the better read on the business.

Bottom line: Jackson delivered a modest earnings beat with genuinely strong retail and RILA demand, while capital generation stayed healthy. The quarter strengthens the existing growth-and-capital-return story, but it does not fundamentally change it.
