In line — Revenue $49.0M vs ~$47.3M consensus; EPS $(0.67) vs $(0.66) consensus
American Well’s Q3 earnings beat revenue expectations and lifted 2026 revenue and EBITDA guidance, though losses and cash-flow execution remain unresolved.
Amwell is in the middle of a cost-cutting and platform-transition story: it is trying to make its unified software platform more central to payer and health-system customers while moving toward AI-enabled care and positive cash generation. The prior setup already called for seasonal Q3 weakness, continued client-transition risk and a fourth-quarter cash-flow target; published estimates were roughly $47.3 million of revenue and a $(0.66) per-share loss.
Revenue execution was better than the bar, but not a growth story. Q3 revenue reached $49.0 million versus approximately $47.3 million expected, while still falling 13.0% from $56.3 million a year earlier. That makes the quarter a modest operational beat against the near-term estimate, but the year-over-year contraction shows Amwell is still rebuilding rather than accelerating.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Statements of Operations) | $49.0M (-13.0%) | $56.3M | ~$47.3M |
| Net loss per share (Statements of Operations) | $(0.67) | $(2.00) | $(0.66) |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $(3.6)M | $(12.7)M | |
| FY revenue outlook (Financial Outlook) | $204–206M | $200–205M prior | |
| FY adjusted EBITDA outlook (Financial Outlook) | $(8)–$(7)M | $(9)–$(7)M prior |
The real positive surprise is the outlook lift. Management raised the full-year revenue range to $204–206 million from $200–205 million and narrowed the adjusted EBITDA loss range to $(8)–$(7) million from $(9)–$(7) million. It also reaffirmed AMG visit guidance, so the improvement is coming from revenue and cost execution rather than a higher utilization target. 〔0〕
Profitability is improving year over year, but the near-term path remains uneven. Adjusted EBITDA loss improved sharply from $(12.7) million in Q3 2025 to $(3.6) million, yet worsened sequentially from $(1.2) million in Q2 as previously signaled project and transformation costs weighed on the quarter. GAAP net loss was still $11.0 million, and the company remains dependent on delivering the promised fourth-quarter cash-flow inflection. 〔1〕
The balance sheet gives the transition room, but does not prove the model is fixed. Amwell ended September with $180.8 million of cash and used only $1.9 million of operating cash in the first nine months, a significant improvement from $48.6 million used in the prior-year period. However, nine-month revenue was still down to $155.9 million from $194.0 million, and the company continues to spend on capitalized software development as it completes the platform transformation.
Bottom line: This is a modestly constructive quarter: revenue beat the immediate expectation and management raised its full-year targets. The business is executing its cost reset, but the core growth story is not yet repaired, and Q4 cash-flow delivery remains the next proof point.
