Miss — Adjusted EPS -$0.18 vs roughly -$0.09 consensus
Coupang’s Q3 earnings beat revenue expectations, but profitability, core-commerce margins, and cash generation weakened sharply.
Coupang is trying to keep its core Korean e-commerce engine growing while scaling newer businesses such as Eats, Japan, streaming, fintech, Taiwan, and Farfetch; that transition is occurring alongside the lingering financial and operating costs of its data incident and the July 2026 Incheon fulfillment-center fire. The prior quarter already showed revenue growth but significant margin pressure, while the fire itself was known before this report.
Revenue was better than expected, but the quality of growth weakened. Total revenue reached $9.96 billion, above the published consensus of roughly $9.76 billion, with constant-currency growth of 11%; however, the core Product Commerce business grew only 8% in constant currency while Developing Offerings grew 27%.
The main business is producing less profit from each dollar of sales. Reported gross profit fell 6% year over year, and even excluding $95 million of fire-related gross-profit costs, adjusted gross profit declined 2% with margin at 26.7% versus 29.4% a year earlier. Product Commerce was weaker still: adjusted gross profit fell 4% and adjusted margin dropped to 29.5% from 32.1%. This is more concerning than the revenue beat because Product Commerce remains the economic base of the company.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue (Financial Highlights) | $9.96B (+7%) | $9.27B | ~$9.76B |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (Reconciliations) | ($0.18) | $0.05 | ~($0.09) |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $116M (-72%) | $413M | |
| Adjusted gross profit (Adjusted Gross Profit) | $2.66B (-2%) | $2.72B | |
| Free cash flow, TTM (Free Cash Flow) | ($409M) | $1.27B |
This was an earnings miss despite the revenue beat. Adjusted diluted EPS was negative $0.18, materially worse than the roughly negative $0.09 consensus; GAAP EPS was negative $0.28 after the fire impact. The fire explains part of the gap, but not all of the underlying deterioration: adjusted operating loss was $202 million versus $162 million of operating income last year, and adjusted EBITDA fell 72% to $116 million.
Cash generation has moved from a strength to a pressure point. Trailing-twelve-month operating cash flow fell to $845 million from $2.37 billion, while free cash flow swung to negative $409 million from positive $1.27 billion. Coupang also spent $1.05 billion repurchasing shares during the first nine months while cash and restricted cash declined to $5.54 billion from $7.32 billion at year-end.
Developing Offerings are growing quickly but remain a drag on consolidated earnings. The segment’s revenue rose 23% reported and gross profit rose 19%, yet it generated a $269 million adjusted EBITDA loss. That means the expansion story is gaining scale, but it is not yet offsetting the deterioration in the core commerce engine.
Bottom line: Coupang delivered a genuine revenue beat, but the more important operating signal was weaker core profitability and sharply lower cash generation. The fire adds a temporary hit, yet the adjusted results show the business is under pressure beyond that one-off event.
