Avis Budget Group, Inc. (CAR) · Nov 3, 2026 · Earnings
Miss — Diluted EPS $5.15 vs ~$8.01 consensus
Avis Budget’s Q3 earnings missed expectations despite better fleet utilization. Revenue held near forecast, but EBITDA and EPS declined sharply.
Avis Budget is in the middle of a fleet-reset turnaround: after softer booking trends, it has been shrinking the vehicle base to protect utilization and returns rather than chasing volume. Management highlighted that strategy again after Q2, when it said it had moved quickly to resize the fleet and protect utilization. The operational reset is working, but it has not yet translated into stronger earnings. Third-quarter utilization reached 74.0%, up 2.0 percentage points year over year, while the average fleet was 5% smaller. But revenue fell 2%, Adjusted EBITDA fell 8%, and diluted EPS was $5.15 versus a published consensus of about $8.01. The company itself reported $3.4 billion of revenue, $199 million of net income, and $513 million of Adjusted EBITDA.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $3,436M -2% | $3,519M | ~$3,420M |
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $5.15 | $10.11 | ~$8.01 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $513M (-8%) | $559M | |
| Vehicle utilization (Key Metrics) | 74.0% (+2.0 ppts) | 72.0% | |
| Average rental fleet (Key Metrics) | 706,717 (-5%) | 746,161 | |
| Per-unit fleet costs/month (Key Metrics) | $316 (+4%) | $303 |
The headline miss is earnings, not demand capture. Revenue was slightly above the roughly $3.42 billion consensus, but the bottom line was far below the roughly $8.01 EPS expectation, and EBITDA declined in both the Americas and International segments. The gap reflects a business that is running fewer cars more efficiently, but still facing higher Americas fleet costs and weaker operating leverage; Americas revenue fell 3% and Americas EBITDA fell 8% despite utilization improving to 74.1%. The release described Americas utilization as its best in twenty years despite softer travel demand. 〔0〕
Cash generation provides some support, but not a clean offset. Adjusted free cash flow was $198 million through nine months, while cash and restricted cash ended at $647 million. However, corporate debt remained $6.0 billion and attributable stockholders’ equity was negative $3.2 billion, so the improved fleet economics have not materially changed the balance-sheet burden. The filing also shows nine-month Adjusted EBITDA down 8% to $686 million, reinforcing that this is not just a one-quarter earnings distortion.
Bottom line: Avis is making real progress on fleet utilization and capacity discipline, but Q3 shows the turnaround is not yet producing better profitability. Against expectations, the earnings miss outweighs the operational improvement and weakens the current story rather than advancing it.
