Miss — Adjusted diluted EPS $0.33 vs ~$0.36 consensus
Core Molding’s Q3 earnings show strong product growth and a revenue beat, but adjusted EPS missed as tooling mix and Mexico costs pressured margins.
Core Molding is in an investment-heavy growth transition: it is expanding Mexico capacity, shifting toward building products and industrial markets, and trying to recover truck demand while building a larger commercial pipeline. Its September investor-day plan already called for 2026 sales to be flat to up 5%, gross margins of 16%–17%, and tooling revenue to be pulled forward into Q3; Monterrey commissioning costs and footprint-optimization spending were also known headwinds.
The underlying demand picture improved, but the headline revenue beat is less informative than it looks. Total revenue reached $90.2 million, well above the published ~$62.6 million consensus, but tooling revenue jumped to $25.4 million from $4.3 million as previously disclosed accounting and contract timing pulled revenue forward. Production revenue — the cleaner read on ongoing product demand — rose about 20% to $64.8 million, helped by medium- and heavy-duty truck, building-products, and industrial-and-utilities sales. 〔0〕
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total net revenue (Financial Highlights) | $90.2M (+54.4%) | $58.4M | $62.6M |
| Production revenue (Revenue by Market) | $64.8M (+19.7%) | $54.2M | |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (Adjusted Net Income) | $0.33 | $0.24 | $0.36 |
| Gross margin (Financial Highlights) | 14.8% | 17.4% | |
| Adjusted EBITDA margin (Adjusted EBITDA) | 7.1% | 11.0% |
Profitability was the miss. Adjusted diluted EPS of $0.33 fell short of the roughly $0.36 consensus, while adjusted EBITDA was essentially flat at $6.4 million despite the large revenue increase. Reported gross margin fell to 14.8% from 17.4%, and the company’s 18.6% “adjusted” margin excludes tooling mix and Monterrey commissioning charges; that framing is useful, but it does not change the fact that current reported profitability remains below the 16%–17% full-year target. 〔1〕
The growth investments are advancing, but cash conversion is the main cost. Core spent $19.7 million on capital expenditures in the first nine months, including $12.2 million for Mexico, while operating cash flow fell to $3.4 million from $14.2 million and free cash flow swung to negative $16.3 million. Cash ended the quarter at $5.4 million with $4.8 million drawn on the revolver, though the company retains $100 million of total credit facilities and very low reported debt relative to trailing adjusted EBITDA.
Management reaffirmed the existing outlook rather than raising the bar. Full-year sales remain expected to be flat to up approximately 5%, with gross margins targeted at 16%–17%; that is consistent with the investor-day setup, so the guidance itself is not a new positive surprise. The next proof point is whether Mexico capacity and the announced business wins convert into higher-margin production in 2027 rather than merely more revenue with heavier spending.
Bottom line: This was a mixed quarter leaning negative: product demand and the commercial pipeline improved, but the revenue beat was heavily timing-driven and adjusted EPS still missed as margins and cash flow weakened. The strategy remains intact, but execution has not yet produced the profitability improvement investors were waiting for.
