Beam Therapeutics earnings miss as revenue collapses; clinical milestones hold

Miss — EPS −$1.28 vs ~$−$1.15 consensus; revenue $0.3M vs ~$8.75M consensus

Beam Therapeutics earnings show a sharp revenue shortfall and wider loss, while risto-cel, BEAM-302 and BEAM-301 continue advancing.

Beam is a clinical-stage base-editing biotech moving from platform validation toward its first potential commercial filing, with risto-cel nearing a possible sickle-cell BLA and BEAM-302 advancing through its pivotal cohort. That broader transition was already visible before this report: the prior quarter had disclosed the first BEAM-302 pivotal-cohort patient and reaffirmed a mid-2029 runway.

The quarter missed financially, mainly because collaboration revenue disappeared. Q3 revenue was just $0.3 million versus a published consensus near $8.75 million, while EPS was $1.28 of loss versus roughly $1.15 expected; the filing shows license and collaboration revenue falling from $9.7 million a year ago to $0.3 million. The resulting $134.4 million net loss was wider than last year’s $112.6 million loss.

Q3 2026Q3 2025Consensus / prior

The operating story did not break, but most of the clinical news was already known. BEAM-302’s durable AAT gains and reductions in mutant Z-AAT were presented in September, while BEAM-301’s early proof-of-concept data were presented in October; the report mainly confirms continued enrollment and the planned 60 mg cohort. 〔0〕

The main fresh detail is portfolio expansion, not a new efficacy step-up. Beam added a third BEAM-304 editor and says the program could address up to 50% of U.S. PKU patients, with dosing still expected in early 2027. Risto-cel’s possible year-end BLA and BEAM-302’s first-half-2027 pivotal dosing completion remain the key value-bearing milestones, but both timelines were already part of the standing story before this filing. 〔1〕

Funding remains adequate for the stated development plan, but the cushion is lower than at year-end. Cash and marketable securities declined to $1.0 billion from $1.2 billion at December 31, 2025, and the company still assumes an additional $200 million draw from its Sixth Street facility to fund operations into mid-2029.

Bottom line: This was a clear quarterly earnings miss, but not a clinical setback. The filing modestly weakens the near-term financial read while leaving Beam’s central risto-cel and base-editing development story broadly intact, so it matters less as a pipeline update than as evidence of continued heavy cash burn and negligible current revenue.
