JBT Marel earnings beat, but CPG weakness cuts revenue outlook

Beat — Adjusted EPS $2.19 vs ~$2.11 consensus

JBT Marel’s third-quarter earnings beat expectations, but weaker CPG-related volume cut revenue guidance. Margin expansion and buybacks add support.

JBT Marel is still in the post-merger integration phase, combining JBT and Marel while pursuing cost synergies, margin expansion, and deleveraging. Earlier guidance depended on strong backlog conversion and continued execution in Prepared Food and Beverage Solutions; the latest filing shows that margin delivery is working, but near-term volume is less reliable.

The quarter beat on profitability, but not on demand. Adjusted EPS was $2.19 versus a published consensus of roughly $2.11, while revenue of $994 million missed the roughly $1.03 billion expectation. The filing attributes the shortfall to weaker CPG-related book-and-ship volume in Prepared Food and Beverage Solutions, where revenue fell 6%, partly offset by 6% growth in Protein Solutions.

MetricQ3 2026Q3 2025Consensus / prior guidance
Revenue (Financial Statements)$994M (-0.7%)$1,001M~$1,030M consensus
Adjusted EPS (Adjusted EPS reconciliation)$2.19 (+12.9%)$1.94~$2.11 consensus
Adjusted EBITDA (Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation)$179M (+4.7%)$171M—
Adjusted EBITDA margin (Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation)18.0% (+0.9 pts)17.1%—
FY revenue guidance (Guidance)$3.95B-$4.00B—Prior: $3.99B-$4.065B
FY adjusted EPS guidance (Guidance)$8.10-$8.40—Prior: $7.85-$8.35

Cost execution is the strongest part of the update. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 18.0%, above the prior-year 17.1%, as pricing, productivity, restructuring, supply-chain savings, and footprint optimization more than offset weaker volume. Protein Solutions delivered a 22.4% segment margin, while Prepared Food and Beverage Solutions also expanded its margin to 19.2% despite the revenue decline. 〔0〕

The outlook shifts from volume confidence to margin defense. Full-year revenue guidance was reduced below the prior range and below the published consensus midpoint of roughly $4.02 billion, reflecting weaker fourth-quarter expectations in Diversified Food and Health. At the same time, the midpoint of adjusted EBITDA margin rose from 17.25% to 17.375%, and adjusted EPS guidance moved above the prior range midpoint, helped by lower interest expense, taxes, and share count. This is a genuine mixed signal: integration savings are arriving faster than expected, but the underlying demand picture in one important segment has weakened.

The larger buyback adds capital-allocation support, not a fix for the volume issue. The board increased the repurchase authorization by $500 million to $700 million, while the company said buybacks would be balanced against maintaining leverage within its 2.0-to-2.5x target range. The company had already generated $252 million of year-to-date free cash flow and reduced net debt to $1.596 billion, but leverage remains near the top of its stated range at 2.45x.

Bottom line: JBT Marel beat on earnings because cost savings and margins are carrying the business, but weaker CPG volume forced a revenue reset. The integration story is advancing operationally, while the demand story has become less clean and slightly weaker overall.
