Beat — Revenue $46.5M vs ~$43.5M consensus; adjusted EBITDA $5.4M vs $1M-$2M guide
Chegg’s Q3 earnings beat revenue and EBITDA expectations while the company eliminated debt. The harder test is whether its employability pivot can replace falling academic revenue.
Chegg is a post-AI turnaround story: its legacy homework-help business is shrinking, while management is trying to build an employability platform around internships, workforce skills, language learning, and institutional partnerships. The company had already guided to Q3 revenue of $43 million-$44 million and adjusted EBITDA of $1 million-$2 million, while positioning debt repayment and cost reduction as the bridge to a future growth phase.
The quarter beat the near-term bar by a wide margin. Revenue reached $46.5 million versus published consensus of roughly $43.5 million, and adjusted EBITDA was $5.4 million versus the prior $1 million-$2 million guide. That is meaningful execution against the deliberately lowered Q3 bar, even though revenue still fell about 40% year over year and adjusted EBITDA fell about 59% from last year. The GAAP loss also narrowed to $0.04 per share from $0.16, ahead of the roughly $0.07 loss expected.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / guide | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Income Statement) | $46.5M (-40.2%) | $77.7M | ~$43.5M |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation) | $5.4M (-59.0%) | $13.3M | $1M-$2M guide |
| GAAP EPS (Income Statement) | $(0.04) | $(0.16) | ~$(0.07) |
| Free cash flow (Free Cash Flow reconciliation) | $15.0M | $2.8M |
The balance sheet reset is real, but it is not the same as business recovery. Chegg fully repaid its remaining convertible debt and ended with $43.6 million of cash and investments, removing a meaningful financial constraint and giving the company more room to fund the employability transition. The improvement in free cash flow and sharply lower operating costs make the runway cleaner, but the core revenue base is still contracting and the new businesses are not yet large enough to offset that decline. 〔0〕
The strategic proof point remains ahead, not in this quarter. Chegg says has drawn more than 100,000 visitors, added three university pilot programs, and is preparing to add 70,000 early-career listings; it also says the employability platform should contribute more meaningfully in 2027. Those are early traction signals, not yet evidence of material revenue replacement. The debt payoff was largely anticipated from the second-quarter outlook, so the genuinely new information is that Chegg outperformed its low operating targets while the pivot is still unproven. 〔1〕
Board change is routine. Marcela Martin’s resignation is effective December 10, 2026, and the filing explicitly says it is not related to a dispute or disagreement with management or company operations, so it does not materially alter the business read.
Bottom line: Chegg delivered a clear operating beat and removed its debt burden, strengthening the bridge to its next chapter. But this is still a turnaround in progress: the quarter improves execution and financial flexibility without yet proving that employability can replace the shrinking homework business.
