Beat — Non-GAAP EPS $1.62 vs ~$1.40 consensus
HNI earnings beat consensus on adjusted EPS as cost control powered upside, organic sales stayed healthy, and Steelcase synergies rose.
HNI is in the middle of turning the December 2025 Steelcase acquisition into a larger, more profitable workplace-furnishings platform, while its legacy businesses and residential products are pursuing organic growth and cost reductions. The prior quarter had already pointed to a strong second half, with Q3 adjusted EPS growth expected in the mid-to-high 20% range and fully mature Steelcase synergies targeted at $120 million.
The quarter beat the earnings bar, mainly through execution rather than a top-line surprise. Non-GAAP diluted EPS was $1.62 versus a published consensus near $1.40, while revenue of $1.593 billion was essentially in line with the roughly $1.60 billion expectation. The company says adjusted EPS exceeded its internal expectations despite slightly lower-than-expected volume growth, with expense control, price-cost benefits, productivity, and investment timing doing the work.
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Performance) | $1,592.9M | $683.8M | $1,600M |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS (Financial Performance) | $1.62 | $1.10 | $1.40 |
| Organic net sales (Organic Net Sales Reconciliation) | 5.6% | — | — |
| Workplace non-GAAP operating margin (Workplace Furnishings Reconciliation) | 11.7% | 12.3% | — |
| Residential non-GAAP operating margin (Residential Building Products Reconciliation) | 20.2% | 18.0% | — |
The underlying demand picture improved, but the workplace margin story is not clean yet. Organic consolidated sales rose 5.6%, workplace orders increased 6%, and residential orders increased 4%; workplace volume growth returned to positive territory. 〔0〕 That is meaningful progress from the pre-filing setup, but the acquired Steelcase business pulled consolidated workplace non-GAAP margin down to 11.7% from 12.3%. Temporary inflation-related price-cost pressure and international weakness remain offsets even as integration savings build.
Steelcase integration is progressing ahead of the original synergy plan. HNI lifted its fully mature synergy target from at least $120 million to at least $130 million, with the original target now expected by the end of year four. That improves the long-term economics of the acquisition, although the near-term benefit is partly being absorbed by inflation and geopolitical pressure.
Guidance remains constructive rather than newly reset higher. HNI still expects 20%-25% non-GAAP EPS growth for 2026 and mid-20% EPS growth in Q4, while legacy workplace revenue is expected to grow at a low-single-digit rate and residential revenue to hold roughly flat. The new information is therefore less about a wholesale outlook upgrade and more about better-than-expected quarterly conversion and higher eventual Steelcase synergies.
Bottom line: HNI delivered a real earnings beat and showed improving organic demand, but the acquired workplace business still carries margin and macro offsets. The event modestly strengthens the integration-and-profit-improvement story rather than rewriting it.
