In line — Operating loss $20.4M vs $20.7M a year ago; EPS beat was non-cash
Precision BioSciences’ Q3 earnings show controlled spending and a cash runway through 2028, but the EPS beat came from a non-cash warrant gain. HBV and DMD data are now the real catalysts.
Precision is a clinical-stage gene-editing company advancing two wholly owned programs—PBGENE-HBV for chronic hepatitis B and PBGENE-DMD for Duchenne muscular dystrophy—while using its balance sheet to reach near-term clinical readouts. That remains the standing story, and the company’s 2026 priorities already centered on those programs and a runway extending through 2028.
The quarter itself was operationally ordinary. Revenue was effectively zero, R&D spending fell modestly to $12.7 million, G&A rose to $7.7 million, and the operating loss was $20.4 million versus $20.7 million a year earlier. That is controlled execution, not a meaningful change in the business trajectory.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / YE25 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Statements) | $0.0M | $0.013M | ~$1.38M |
| Operating loss (Financial Statements) | $(20.4)M | $(20.7)M | |
| Diluted EPS (Financial Statements) | $(0.28) | $(1.84) | ~$(0.85) |
| Cash, equivalents and restricted cash (Balance Sheet) | $108.0M | $137.2M |
The apparent EPS beat is low quality. Net loss improved to $7.6 million, or $0.28 per share, but the improvement was driven primarily by a $12.7 million non-cash gain from revaluing warrant liabilities—not by stronger revenue, lower core spending, or operating profitability. The published consensus pointed to a roughly $0.85 per-share loss, but that comparison overstates the quarter’s underlying improvement. 〔0〕
The meaningful update is that Precision still has time to run the trials. Cash fell from $137.2 million at December 31, 2025 to $108.0 million at September 30, 2026, yet management continues to project funding through 2028 and the key HBV and DMD data milestones. That extends the company’s operating runway, but it does not remove the need for clinical proof or eliminate future financing risk.
Clinical execution advanced, but most of this was already known. The first PBGENE-DMD patient was dosed in August, and the HBV late-breaking presentation was announced on October 8, so the filing mainly confirms that both programs remain on schedule rather than creating a new surprise. 〔1〕 The next information that can actually change the story is the HBV dataset, followed by initial DMD safety data targeted for year-end 2026. 〔2〕
Bottom line: This is a clean funding-and-execution update, not a thesis-changing earnings surprise. The story remains dependent on the upcoming PBGENE-HBV data and early PBGENE-DMD safety results, while the reported EPS improvement should be discounted because it came from a non-cash accounting gain.
