Talen Energy Corp (TLN) · Nov 3, 2026 · Earnings
In line — Q3 revenue $1.327B vs ~$1.30B consensus; no clean adjusted EBITDA consensus
Talen’s third-quarter earnings show powerful EBITDA and free-cash-flow growth, but unchanged 2026 guidance and higher financing costs temper the upside.
Talen is scaling from a nuclear-and-dispatchable power fleet into a larger PJM platform positioned for rising electricity demand, including data-center load; the June Cornerstone acquisition added roughly 2.6 GW and was already expected to lift 2026 results.
The operating engine delivered a strong quarter. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $669 million from $363 million, while adjusted free cash flow reached $433 million from $223 million, driven by the acquired assets, higher settled power prices, generation volumes and capacity revenue.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating revenue (Income Statement) | $1,327M (+63.4%) | $812M | ~$1,300M |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $669M (+84.3%) | $363M | |
| Adjusted free cash flow (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $433M (+94.2%) | $223M | |
| GAAP net income (Income Statement) | $138M (-33.3%) | $207M |
The headline earnings quality is mixed rather than a clean beat. Revenue modestly exceeded the roughly $1.30 billion published estimate, but available EPS estimates were unusually dispersed and appear not to be an apples-to-apples benchmark for Talen’s reported GAAP result. The quarter’s $2.88 diluted GAAP EPS was dragged down by unrealized commodity-derivative losses and substantially higher interest expense; the filing says GAAP net income decreased by $69 million for those reasons. 〔0〕 Published revenue estimates were around $1.30 billion, while published EPS estimates ranged widely, making a precise EPS beat-or-miss call unreliable.
The outlook confirms the acquisition thesis but does not raise the near-term bar. Talen reaffirmed the midpoint of its 2026 EBITDA and free-cash-flow guidance while narrowing the ranges, so the strong nine-month performance is being absorbed into the existing plan rather than converted into a fresh upgrade. New 2027 midpoint guidance implies roughly 26% EBITDA growth and 27% free-cash-flow growth, reflecting a full year of Cornerstone contributions and favorable PJM fundamentals. The key signal is execution on a previously established expansion story, not a major rewrite of it.
Capital returns are substantial, but partly funded by selling future capacity cash flows. The company expanded its repurchase authorization to $3.0 billion and launched a $1.5 billion accelerated buyback, with 80% of that ASR already settled through shares received on October 1. The funding came from a capacity monetization that sold rights to approximately $1.5 billion of future PJM capacity cash flows for $1.3 billion of net proceeds. That accelerates per-share capital returns, but it also exchanges some future upside for immediate repurchases while acquisition-related interest remains elevated.
Bottom line: Talen’s underlying power and cash-flow performance is clearly improving, but the filing mostly validates the existing Cornerstone-and-PJM growth case rather than exceeding it. The result is modestly positive overall, with strong operating momentum offset by weaker GAAP earnings, unchanged 2026 guidance and higher financing complexity.
