Beat — Common EPS $1.15 vs ~$1.13 consensus
MPLX earnings beat expectations on higher EBITDA and cash flow, while aggressive Permian and Marcellus investment keeps post-distribution cash flow negative.
MPLX is a large midstream partnership shifting its growth engine toward natural gas and NGL infrastructure in the Permian and Marcellus, with 2026 growth capital raised to $2.9 billion to accelerate Gulf Coast fractionation, export and pipeline projects.
Core earnings landed modestly ahead of the bar. Common diluted earnings were $1.15 per unit versus a published consensus near $1.13, while adjusted EBITDA rose 5.3% year over year to $1.859 billion. The beat is real, but not transformational: higher operating expenses and incentive compensation absorbed part of the operational improvement.
The underlying business is progressing, especially in natural gas and NGLs. Crude Oil and Products Logistics EBITDA increased 6%, while Natural Gas and NGL Services EBITDA increased 4%; gathering throughput rose 4% and NGL fractionation volumes rose 3%. That supports the existing Permian-to-Gulf-Coast and Marcellus expansion story rather than rewriting it.
The distribution increase was supportable, but not a surprise. MPLX raised the quarterly distribution 12.5% to $1.2111 per unit, matching the pace management had already flagged for 2026. Coverage held at 1.3x, so the payout remains funded, but the cushion did not expand.
The trade-off is visible in cash conversion and leverage. Distributable cash flow rose to $1.537 billion, but adjusted free cash flow after distributions was still negative $645 million for the quarter and negative $1.613 billion for the first nine months as growth capital spending accelerated. Debt-to-LTM EBITDA moved up to 3.8x from 3.7x, leaving MPLX dependent on project ramp-up, asset-sale proceeds and available funding capacity to finance the buildout.
The new asset-sale and funding details reduce, but do not remove, execution pressure. MPLX plans to sell logistics assets tied to MPC's St. Paul Park and Mandan refinery divestitures for $750 million and redeploy the proceeds into growth, while MPC increased MPLX's intercompany borrowing capacity to $2.5 billion and extended the maturity to October 30, 2031. Those actions improve flexibility, but they also underline how capital-intensive the current expansion cycle is.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $1.15 | $1.52 | ~$1.13 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $1,859M | $1,766M | |
| DCF (Financial Highlights) | $1,537M | $1,468M | |
| Distribution per unit (Financial Highlights) | $1.2111 | $1.0765 | |
| Distribution coverage (Financial Highlights) | 1.3x | 1.3x | |
| Adjusted FCF after distributions (Cash Flow reconciliation) | $(645)M | $(3,280)M | |
| Debt / LTM EBITDA (Financial Data) | 3.8x | 3.7x |
Bottom line: MPLX beat a modest quarterly earnings benchmark and is executing its gas-and-NGL expansion, but the result is an incremental strengthening of the existing story—not a reset—because heavy capital spending still outpaces cash available after distributions and leverage has edged higher.
