Beat — Adjusted EPS $0.39 vs ~$0.20 consensus; revenue $691M vs ~$671M
Louisiana-Pacific earnings beat consensus as Siding returned to volume growth, while OSB losses narrowed and full-year guidance improved.
LP is trying to make Siding—especially SmartSide—a steadier growth engine while absorbing a severe OSB downturn. The prior quarter had already pointed to a third-quarter return to Siding growth, and LP had just expanded SmartSide distribution nationwide, so the direction was partly expected; the surprise is that the rebound arrived with a clear earnings beat.

Siding delivered the operational proof point LP needed. Siding revenue exceeded the company’s quarterly guide and volume rose to 477 million square feet from 468 million a year earlier, ending the recent volume slide. LP says the gain came from both higher prices and volumes, while the new distribution strategy is intended to widen SmartSide access. 〔0〕 The important caveat is that year-to-date Siding EBITDA was still down $15 million because lower volumes and higher input costs absorbed most of the pricing benefit.
The quarterly earnings beat was broad, not just a tax or one-time item. Adjusted diluted EPS of $0.39 was well above published estimates around $0.20–$0.21, while revenue also topped estimates around $671–674 million. LP’s reported Adjusted EBITDA was flat year over year overall, but the mix improved: Siding grew modestly, OSB’s loss narrowed, and the quarter avoided the prior year’s impairment charge. The underlying signal is therefore better than the headline consolidated EBITDA growth suggests, though not a full earnings recovery.
OSB remains the structural drag, but the damage was less severe than LP had guided. OSB still lost $24 million of Adjusted EBITDA, with structural-solutions shipments down 10% and pricing pressure continuing. Yet that loss was materially better than the $45 million quarterly loss embedded in the prior outlook, helped by lower inventory-reserve adjustments. This is stabilization, not a turnaround: year-to-date OSB Adjusted EBITDA was negative $58 million versus positive $46 million last year.
Full-year guidance moved in the right direction, mainly because the Siding and OSB assumptions improved. LP raised the consolidated Adjusted EBITDA range to $270–280 million from $255–270 million, lifted the Siding EBITDA range modestly, cut the expected OSB loss to $95 million from $120 million, and reduced planned capital spending to roughly $300 million from roughly $320 million. That makes the quarter more than a simple beat: it modestly improves the near-term business path, even though full-year Siding sales are still expected to decline about 1% and OSB remains loss-making.
Bottom line: This was a clearly better quarter than expected and the first convincing sign that Siding’s volume problem is easing. It strengthens LP’s current story, but does not yet overturn the larger picture because OSB and year-to-date performance remain weak.
