Cabot earnings beat, but FY27 EPS guide lands below consensus

Miss — FY27 adjusted EPS guide midpoint $6.45 vs ~$7.08 consensus

Cabot’s earnings beat estimates, but its fiscal 2027 guidance trails consensus as core reinforcement margins weaken.

Cabot is a specialty-materials company trying to shift growth toward battery materials while its larger reinforcement business faces pricing and margin pressure. Its prior fiscal 2026 framework called for adjusted EPS of roughly $6.00–$7.00 and an operating tax rate of 27%–29% (Fiscal 2025 annual outlook).

The quarter itself beat expectations, with revenue and adjusted EPS both ahead. Fourth-quarter adjusted EPS was $1.61 versus published consensus near $1.55, while revenue reached $1.009 billion versus roughly $927 million–$943 million expected. The beat was helped by Performance Chemicals, where EBIT rose $18 million year over year, but it was partly offset by a $32 million decline in Reinforcement Materials EBIT.

Q4 2026Q4 2025Consensus
Adjusted EPS (Reconciliation of Adjusted EPS)$1.61$1.70$1.55
Net sales (Consolidated Statements of Operations)$1,009M$899M$927M–$943M
Reinforcement Materials EBIT (Summary Results by Segment)$87M$119M
Performance Chemicals EBIT (Summary Results by Segment)$60M$42M
FY27 adjusted EPS guide (Outlook)$6.15–$6.75$7.08

The forward guide is the more important surprise, and it resets earnings expectations lower. Cabot introduced fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS guidance of $6.15–$6.75, a midpoint of $6.45 versus published consensus around $7.08. That implies the quarter’s beat does not carry through into the next fiscal year, with management flagging volatile energy costs, competitive pressure and ongoing restructuring.

The portfolio transition is progressing, but it is not yet large enough to offset weakness in the legacy profit engine. Battery Materials generated a record $43 million of fiscal-year EBITDA and Cabot secured a $50 million Department of Energy grant for U.S. conductive-additive capacity. However, Reinforcement Materials’ full-year EBIT fell to $379 million from $508 million, and its fourth-quarter EBITDA margin declined to 18% from 23% a year earlier (Summary Results by Segment; Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Financial Measures).

Cash generation and balance-sheet capacity remain supportive, but they do not change the earnings reset. Fiscal-year operating cash flow was $421 million, free cash flow was $214 million, and net debt to EBITDA stood at 1.4 times at year-end (Cash Flow statement; Cash Performance). The company can continue funding battery investments, dividends and repurchases, but the new outlook says the near-term earnings trajectory is weaker than the market had assumed.

Bottom line: Cabot delivered a genuine fourth-quarter beat, but its first fiscal 2027 outlook is below expectations and carries more weight. The battery-materials strategy is advancing, yet the filing modestly weakens the near-term business story because core-margin pressure remains unresolved.
