Alamo Group earnings miss as industrial margins slide

Miss — adj. EPS $2.06 vs ~$2.62 consensus

Alamo Group earnings missed consensus as industrial demand and margins weakened, while portfolio exits improved vegetation management and Econ expanded its industrial footprint.

Alamo Group is trying to reshape a two-division equipment maker: stabilize its troubled Vegetation Management business while using acquisitions to expand Industrial Equipment. Recent results had shown strong industrial growth but a falling backlog, while management had already flagged portfolio optimization and a disciplined M&A strategy.

The quarter missed the market’s operating hurdle, not just GAAP earnings. Adjusted diluted EPS was $2.06 versus a published consensus of roughly $2.62, while revenue was $403.1 million versus approximately $437.1 million expected. The $33.3 million portfolio-optimization charge explains much of the GAAP collapse, but it does not explain the underlying miss: adjusted net income fell 12% year over year and adjusted EBITDA declined to $52.4 million.

MetricQ3 2026Q3 2025Consensus
Net sales (Financial Statements)$403.1M (-4.0%)$420.0M$437.1M
Adjusted diluted EPS (EPS reconciliation)$2.06 (-12.0%)$2.34$2.62
Adjusted EBITDA (EBITDA reconciliation)$52.4M (-4.8%)$55.0M
Industrial adjusted EBITDA margin (Industrial Equipment Performance)13.4% (-2.1 pts)15.5%
Vegetation adjusted EBITDA margin (Vegetation Management Performance)12.5% (+2.8 pts)9.7%

Industrial Equipment was the main operational miss. Sales fell 5.8%, and adjusted EBITDA margin dropped to 13.4% from 15.5% as softer end markets, earlier order timing, material and freight inflation, and fixed-cost deleverage overwhelmed the Petersen contribution. Management says pricing actions were taken, but they lagged inflation; backlog also fell to $350.4 million from $438.1 million a year earlier. 〔0〕

Vegetation Management is improving, but the cleanup is expensive. Excluding the $7.3 million divestiture-related sales reduction, division sales grew 2.7%, while adjusted EBITDA margin improved to 12.5% from 9.7%. That is genuine progress against the turnaround story, but the division still reported a $19.0 million GAAP operating loss, and the company booked $33.3 million of net pre-tax charges to sell or wind down Dixie Chopper, Boxer and other activities.

Econ adds strategic breadth but also increases execution demands after a weak quarter. The October 27 acquisition of Econ for $158.7 million was already public before the earnings release, so the acquisition itself is not the surprise. It expands the industrial portfolio, but Alamo funded it with revolver borrowings; net debt moved from net cash of $35.4 million a year earlier to $1.7 million of net debt at quarter-end.

Bottom line: The portfolio cleanup is producing early margin improvement in Vegetation Management, but the core quarter was materially below expectations because Industrial Equipment weakened and inflation compressed margins. Econ strengthens the strategic direction, yet this filing makes the near-term execution story harder, not easier.
