In line — Adjusted NII $0.26 vs ~$0.258 consensus
New Mountain Finance earnings narrowly clear consensus and cover the dividend, but weaker income, falling NAV and higher leverage cloud the story.
New Mountain Finance is a business development company lending to upper-middle-market, defensive-growth businesses, while trying to rotate from equity and PIK-heavy assets into first-lien, cash-paying loans. That repositioning was already the stated priority after Q2, when adjusted net investment income was $0.26 per share and non-accruals had improved.
Operating earnings were essentially in line, not a real upside surprise. Adjusted net investment income of $0.26 per share edged the published consensus of roughly $0.258, and it covered the $0.25 dividend. But the result simply repeated Q2’s $0.26 per share, while reported net investment income fell from $0.32 a year earlier. The filing itself says, “In the third quarter, NMFC covered its dividend.” 〔0〕
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Comparison | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted NII/share (Financial Highlights) | $0.26 | $0.32 | ~$0.258 |
| Dividend/share (Financial Highlights) | $0.25 | $0.32 | |
| NAV/share (Balance Sheet) | $10.67 | $10.89 Jun. 2026 | |
| Investment portfolio (Portfolio Summary) | $2,265.7M | $2,295.5M Jun. 2026 | |
| Statutory debt/equity (Liquidity and Capital Resources) | 1.19x | 1.16x Jun. 2026 |
The underlying earnings engine is still weakening. Total investment income dropped to $60.4 million from $80.5 million a year earlier, while net investment income declined to $23.7 million from $34.0 million. The dividend remains covered, but only by a thin $0.01 per share on an adjusted basis, leaving little evidence yet that the planned shift toward higher-quality cash income has reversed the pressure.
The portfolio rotation is not yet translating into growth. NMFC originated only $10.3 million of investments against $35.8 million of repayments and $8.1 million of sales, so the portfolio contracted during the quarter. Management says its objective is to reinvest proceeds into first-lien, cash-paying assets, but this quarter shows runoff ahead of redeployment.
Credit quality remains manageable, but the cushion narrowed. Green-rated investments still represented 86.1% of fair value, while orange and red holdings together were only 2.2% of fair value. Still, NAV fell to $10.67 per share, leverage rose to 1.19x, and the company recorded $20.0 million of realized and unrealized losses. The filing says, “most of the investments in the Company’s portfolio had a Green Risk Rating,” but that is not the same as stable shareholder value. 〔1〕
The post-quarter financing actions simplify the structure but do not fix the earnings trend. NMFC funded $150 million of unsecured notes, reduced its Holdings Credit Facility commitment, and repaid all SBIC I debentures before surrendering that license. Those moves may reduce complexity and financing needs, but the quarter itself still points to a shrinking asset base and declining income.
Bottom line: NMFC slightly clears the earnings bar and covers its dividend, but the more important business signals are falling income, lower NAV, higher leverage and portfolio runoff. This is a mixed quarter that leans negative because the turnaround has not yet produced better asset growth or income quality.
