No bonus royalty — $0 bonus royalty; $3.07M total payment vs $4.01M last year
Mesabi Trust’s latest royalty report shows higher Northshore shipments but no bonus royalties, leaving the quarterly payment below last year’s level.
Mesabi Trust is a single-asset iron-ore royalty trust whose economics depend almost entirely on Northshore Mining’s production, shipments, and realized pricing under Cleveland-Cliffs. The operating volume improved, but the cash outcome did not. Northshore shipments rose to 1,142,290 tons from 987,370 tons a year earlier, a roughly 16% increase, yet Mesabi Trust received only $3.07 million in total royalties. 〔0〕 〔1〕
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | |
|---|---|---|
| Total royalty payment (Royalty Report) | $3.07M (-23.3%) | $4.01M |
| Base royalty (Royalty Report) | $2.80M (-0.5%) | $2.82M |
| Bonus royalty (Royalty Report) | $0 | $0.97M |
| Iron ore shipments (Royalty Report) | 1.142M tons (+15.7%) | 987,370 tons |
The missing bonus royalty remains the central problem. Cliffs again reported that all deemed shipments were priced below the $71.70-per-ton threshold, so the higher tonnage did not translate into bonus income. 〔2〕 The market already knew this risk was active: the first- and second-quarter 2026 royalty reports also carried zero bonus royalties, and the Trust had warned that limited third-party sales could continue to eliminate or reduce historically received bonuses.
This confirms a weaker royalty profile rather than a new operational collapse. The base royalty was broadly stable year over year and shipments recovered, but the loss of bonus pricing income overwhelmed that improvement. Compared with the $4.01 million payment for the third quarter of 2025, the latest $3.07 million receipt is a meaningful deterioration; there is no published earnings consensus for this royalty notice, so the cleanest benchmark is the Trust’s own prior-year payment. The filing also says the reported prices are estimates subject to change and that royalties remain subject to review. 〔3〕
Bottom line: More iron ore moved, but the economics remained impaired because bonus royalties stayed at zero. This is modestly negative for the Trust’s cash-generation story, while largely confirming a weakness already visible in the first half of 2026.
